Gaius Niles

Gaius Niles (Rev. War Pension Application) Mass gives his birthyear as 1746.

entryman listings. This land was sold in 1827 because Gaius could not complete payment and was facing forfeiture, but he continued to live there. The sale was in violation of an 1826 commitment to
sell Alfred fifty acres off the north end. Settled out of court. "

Alfred Willcox

Alfred and Kisiah are in Huntington Twp in 1850; gone in 1860.
"Samantha, age 15" is given at the end of the list in the 1850 Census, in the postion usually reserved for live-in servants, but no last name other than Wilcox is given. This may have been an
omission, as she is too old to be a daughter of any of Alfred & Taphen's sons. She is definately not their daughter as all of Alfred's living heirs are know. She is too young to be ne of the unknown
daughters of Stephen and Susannah. Nor does she fit in Hiram Sr's (1797) family. Therefore, her name, probably, was not Wilcox. (John Wilcox, Delaware, OH)

forty acres in the SE quarter of Sec. 8, land that, later, was part of the George W. Wilcox farm, and, later still, part of the Lew Jones farm. He was principal creditor to Alfred Wilcox (1795) at
the time of Alfred's death in 1847, and in 1849 he purchased Alfred's one-hundred twenty acres in Sec. 16 from the estate (deed in files). Joyce Zeigler finds him in Huntington Twp for 1850 and 1860
Census and in Jackson Co., Liberty Tnshp for 1870 and 1880 Census"

Stephen Willcox

_FA1
PLAC Tabor Cemetery, Gallia Co., OHPer John Wilcox of Delaware, OH:
" Stephen was an entry man on eighty-acres along Spring Run in Section 17. An adjacent forty acres was in Rebecca's name, and an additional forty acres was purchased for Stephen (using Stephen's
money) by his father who was at the land office in Chillicothe. Most of this land descended to Stephen's daughter, Sarah Long (1874 land map), and, thence, apparently to Sarah's daughter Julia
Jones, for it was the nucleus of the Tom Jones farm circa 1920. By 1874 Stephen had accumulated several hundred acres elsewhere, much of which he had distributed among four of his children.
Stephen Wilcox House: On NW corner of crossroads at center of Section 16, a hilltop location on the main road from Vinton to Keystone and Jackson. Date of construction is unknown, except family
tradition has it a station on the "Underground Railway" for aiding excaped slaves during the Civil War. Certainly the house is complicated enough to have hiding places. It was owned, briefly, circa
1950 by Mr. and Mrs. James L. Clark (Aunt Beatrice). Though the Clarks never lived there, yours truly had opportunity to explore to his heart's content. Since then it has been much "improved" and
has completely lost its historic flavor. Hence, I will describe it in past tense.
The main entrance, on the south side, was of classic ? style, recessed, with vertical lights beside the door and fancy moldings. On the east side was an open porch, which faced the road to the Alfred
Wilcox farm and Wilcox Cemetery. At the north end was a kitchen wing, since torn down, with a water well inside. There were two separate basements with no connection, the walls being huge hand-hewn
sandstone blocks. One was an airy room opening to the outside on the downhill (west) side, containing a huge wooden loom that was built right into the house, having no frame of its own. There were,
also, two upstairs areas reached by different staircases and unconnected.
Under a big tree at the road corner was another water well and watering trough where teamsters coming from Keystone would stop to water their animals after climbing Gravel Hill. It was eighty feet
down to the water. I remember throwing pebbles into this well.
Across the road on the south side was the general store operated by Stephen, where he often dealt and traded in livestock. I can remember the remains of a log barn here, where the modern barn now
stands. This was, also, the location of Jimmy Craig's blacksmith shop."
Stephen's death record reads: "Stephen Wilcox, d. August 20 or 24, 1886, 68y 3m, Place of Death: Huntington Township, Place of birth: Gallia County." This is on page 202 of the Death Records, Volume
1, Gallia County Probate Court. Note that disagrees with the death year shown on his tombstone.

John Wilcox

Information on John Wilcox and his family comes from John Wilcox of Delaware, OH...........
John and Elizabeth are in Huntington Twp for 1850 and 1860 Census.
Joyce Zeigler finds them in Bloomfield Twp in the 1870 and 1880 (and also 1860?) (Source: John Wilcox of Delaware, OH)
Death Records Volume 1, Gallia County Probate Court on page 224: "John Willcox, d. February 05, 1888, age 59y 6m 3d, Place of Death: Huntington Township, Place of birth: Gallia County, OH." This
could be this John Willcox.

Elizabeth Gee

Elizabeth Gee Wilcox may be the Betsy Wilcox that Joyce Zeigler finds listed in Huntington Twp, Vol 1, Page 240, #172: " d. May 10, 1888, Age 56, burial unknown".
Joyce Zeigler in an email of September 14, 1998 speculates:
"Betsy Wilcox, Vol. 1, page 240 #172 - age 56 at death. I assumed that she might be Elizabeth (Gee) Wilcox, wife of John Wilcox, Sr. But, the age doesn't quite fit.
From the census, this is now her age was"
1850 age 21 in Huntington Twp., Gallia County
1860 age 30 in Bloomfield Twp., Jackson County
1870 age 41 in Bloomfield Twp., Jackson County
1880 age 51 in Bloomfield Twp., Jackson County
Elizabeth was not listed in John's estate papers as a survivor.
Could whoever gave the information at death been wrong in giving her age?

Vesta Willcox

Vesta Willcox Ewing is buried in the Glenn Cemetery, Vinton, OH. Tombstone is broken and only top part is now set up. Age 34y 8m 8d is recorded by the Gallia County Historical Society but cannot,
now, be virified (John Wilcox, Delaware, OH, 1998)
Vesta and Samuel Howell are listed adjacent to Alvin Martindale in 1850 Census, suggesting that they lived closer to Hiram Willcox, Sr. in Morgan Twp. that to Alfred; however, Hiram Willcox, Sr. says
in his will that his daugher Vesta married George McDowell. Since this (that of Hiram Sr's Vesta) marriage is listed in 1836, she is not the same person discussed here. Also, this person is too
young to be a daugher of Stephen II (1764) and Susannah. Therefore, she must be the unmarried daugher of Alfred mentioned in legal actions at the time of Alfred's 1795 death. (Source: John Wilcox of
Delaware, OH)
