Ralph Freudenberg II

Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, USA:
City, seat (1840) of Hudson county, northeastern New Jersey, U.S. It issituated on a peninsula between the Hudson and Hackensack rivers, opposite Manhattan Island, with which it is connected by the HollandTunnel and the Port Authority Trans-Hudson rapid transit system. Itssite, first visited by Henry Hudson in 1609, was settled by Dutchtrappers in 1618 and became known as Paulus Hook (renamed Jersey City in1836). Michael Pauw purchased it from the Delaware Indians in about 1630,and by 1660 a permanent settlement had been established. In 1664 theBritish seized it briefly, returned it to the Dutch, and then regained itin 1674 as part of the spoils in the Dutch War. On July 19, 1779, duringthe American Revolution, Henry ("Light-Horse Harry") Lee stormed thetown, forcing the British to retreat.
Jersey City's emergence as a major transportation center sharing acommunications complex with New York City began with its docksidefacilities (now part of the Port of New York complex) and the completionof railroads and the old Morris Canal in the 1830s. In 1908 the Hudsonand Manhattan tubes (tunnels) connected it to lower Manhattan Island. Nowhighly industrialized, the city manufactures chemicals, containers, electrical equipment, petroleum products, cosmetics, clothing, and soap.It is the seat of Jersey City State College (1929) and St. Peter'sCollege (1872).
