Note: Its possible people called him "Al" short for Algernon, andWinifred assumed "Al" was for "Alfred". Alginon just seems a commonphonetic spelling of his name from the Freudenbergs.

I used to visit "Uncle Bill" with my parents when he lived inMiddletown with Aunt Mae in the late 40s and early 50s. They lived in theupstairs apartment of a 2 story house. There always seemed to be paintcans and painting paraphenalia in the hallway. He would sometimes play aviolin in a style for square dancing. He had two, one was larger andmust have been a viola. He also would play a pump organ that was in theliving room. He didn't seem to think too much of kids but could bepersuaded to "show off." He was a portly man with a cookie dustermustache. My dad always said he was a lady's man, and I remember himalways having a girl friend in his older age. He was living alone in amountain home in his 83rd year when he cut his foot with an axe whilespliting wood. In typical McDowell fashion, he didn't get medicaltreatment, got gangrene, had first one and then the other leg amputated, and died as a result.
