James Glass (Piatt)

Letter written by W. T. Piatt--grandson of James Glass Piatt.

W. T. Piatt said "He {grandpa} was married twice and had 17 children. and those 17 children had from 10 to 15 children. In those days there was no rural delivery or radios. And the newspaper came when he went to town after it, sometimes 2 weeks or longer after print.
But all those children and grand-children always knew when he had a hog to kill. anyhow they just happened to drop in for a visit. The visit lasted as long as the hog lasted. When the visitors left there was nothing but the bones and hair left for grandpa.

Grandpa never did smoke, drink or chew.

the second time {marriage to Mary Honeycutt} he {grandpa} came to. He found his wife {Mary Honeycutt} and all her relations were hard shelled baptist Democrats. While his was hard-shelled Methodist Republicans....when they got together the boiling pot boiled dry. they would argue, chew and spit. And whittle enough kindling to last a year.

Married in Texas County, MO., we find James And Mary Ann living in Eminence, Spring Valley Twp., Shannon Co., MO. on the 1870 Census with what appears to be their first child together, Jospeh age 5/12.
-----------------------------------------------

James and Mary are listed as widowed in the 1900 Census. James is living with son William and Mary is in a household with the following children, Belle 21, Eliza 19, Albert 18, and Timothy 16. For what ever reason they were not in the same house and maybe the enumerator assumed each was widowed. The names, ages, and places of birth are to close of a match for this not to be our James & Mary.
