Lambert Merrell

6/24/95 Information provided by Agnes Butler in her papers received 5/30/95, written by Isaiah Merrell in 1903. Because Isaiah has listed two brothers of John Merrell as Lambert I am going to assume he was married twice.
9/2/95 Film 0514658 Misc. Genealogical Records, SI 1649 - 1925, lists the Merrell family early generations. Compiled by W.D. Merrell, 21 Arnold Park, Rochester, N.Y., in 1942.

Revolutionary Patriots Buried on Staten Island: Merrill, Lambert at Asbury Methodist Churchyard
9/3/99 From NYRICHMO-D Digest V99 #28, submitted by Holly Tooker:
...also this, from 11 Jan 1787

Richmond County, s s.
Personally came and appeared before me, Lambert MERRILL, one of the Justices
of the peace for the County of Richmond, Lewis FREEMAN, who being duly
sworn,
deposeth and saith, that he the deponent, sailed from the Watering-place, at
Staten Island on board the ship Ladies Adverture (sic), in April, in the
year
1783, in company with James FULTON, Capt in the Kings American Dragoons,
commonly called Parson FULTON that the deponent, in company with Captain
FULTON, landed at the St John's, Nova Scotia, on the twenty-fourth day of
May
following: the deponent well remembers that Capt FULTON (alias Parson
FULTON)
remained in Nova Scotia until some time in the Fall of the year 1784, as
they
both belonged to the same regiment and that there was no other man by the
name of James FULTON in that regiment, nor in the British service, to the
knowledge or belief of the deponent, and further the deponent saith not.

Lambert MERRELL

Of course, Ann HARRIS, the woman in question has a rejoinder to all this. I
will post that next. My question to the list is: were the MERSEREAUs Tories?
Is that why they wound up in Nova Scotia? I know that Nova Scotia was the
destination of choice for Loyalists after the Revolution. Can any MERSEREAU
researchers shed light on this?

By the way, in case you think I am only DECKER-related, I am descendeth from
the said Lambert MERRELL!
Cheers!

9/3/99 Email from Holly Tooker dated 9/2/99:
summarized
from the National Advocate
26 Feb 1819

At a meeting of Representatives of Richmond County held at innkeeper Joshua
MERSEREAU's on 8 Feb 1819, it was decided to appoint a nominating committee
of three men from each town
NORTHFIELD:
Thomas KINGSTON
Abraham CROCHERON
Cornelius CORSON Jr

The longer version can be found, as can all the items I've been posting to
the list, on an LDS microfilm (#0509189) of SI newspaper items (another WPA
project). It's fascinating.

Lambert Merrell turns up as the Justice of the Peace. And one of the
chancery suits, which I don't really understand, is against John LARZELERE,
Lawrence HILLYER and Ann his wife.

I could read them all.
Cheers!

Hi listers,

I've been enjoying the stories of Staten Island in the 1950s. It makes the
place seem much more real to me here in the cornfields of the midwest. I
guess the closest I've been is Stroudsburg PA and that's a long way away.
Once I thought New Jersey was all oil refineries but a pleasant trip to south
Jersey corrected that wrong impression.

I'm on the list because on 13 December 1677 in Woodbridge NJ, Rene Piatt
married Elizabeth SHEFFIELD. Next to nothing is known about her before her
marriage. Her residence is given variously as Culpepper VA (doubtful), Staten
Island, and Flushing, Long Island NY.

Most of the surnames associated with Staten Island are of Dutch origin. Is
there an outside chance that there was a SHEFFIELD family there in or just
prior to 1677? Was there movement back and forth between Staten Island and
Long Island?

Thanks.

Hi, Laverne,
You may associate my name with DECKER if you've been reading postings on the
list for a while, but my Staten Island names connect to Piscataway, New
Jersey. There was in fact, a good deal of to-ing and fro-ing between SI and
New Jersey. Some Staten Islanders went across the Kill and married in Jersey.
I have a PIATT in my background, too.
Jane PIATT(1695-1779)
m Jonathan DUNHAM(1694-1777)[Edmund3, Benajah2, Deacon John1]
5 Aug 1714
They had a son
Jonathan DUNHAM in 1721
who married Keziah FITZ RANDOLPH
and had a daughter
Tabitha DUNHAM
who married
Lambert MERRELL of Staten Island
They had a daughter
Elsie MERRELL who married John HILLYER
and had a daughter
Anna Lakerman HILLYER
who married Matthias DECKER Jr.
They are my gggGparents.
Their youngest son Noah Selleck DECKER
m. Catherine Ann BRAISTED
Their son Selleck Jr m. Mary Elizabeth SHUTPELL
and their daughter Sarah
was my dear, sweet "Nanny." It is in her honor that I slave at my humongous
task: sorting out the DECKERs of Staten Island into families.
I believe that Jane/Joan PIATT/PYATT is the daughter of Rene/Reynier PIATT
(of French Huguenot decent) and Elizabeth SHEFFIELD. Which means I have found
another cousin!
There were many French Huguenots on Staten Island. It is very possible that
Elizabeth SHEFFIELD is from Staten Island although I haven't encountered the
name in my research. But in all fairness, I haven't been looking for it,
frankly.
Please understand that I have suspended research on my other lines in order
to devote myself to my DECKER project. But I'll be glad to hear from you.
Regards,
Holly Tooker

Record claims Johnaton (sic) Merrell died probably young. I am assuming he died before 1774 because their is another Jonathan born in 1774.
