SOURCES: Will 464969, p. 24, Ohio Co.,West Virginia, will dated 13 Mar1818 (18 Nov 1817) Will probated Oct 1818 (d. 9 Sept 1818); 1815 Tax Listfor Ohio County, West Virginia (owned land there as early as 1784 to1788). According to family traditions, John Wayt was educated to become apriest in the Catholic Church of England. He rejected their creed andfled to escape persecution. He eventually settled in what is now OhioCounty, West Virginia. At that time it was Virginia. John and his nephewNathaniel took up "by Tomahawk" a claim in Liberty Twp, Ohio County in1776. It was patented 400 acres in 1806. Here he became a member of thePresbyterian Church, and later became an elder. He took Oath ofAllegiance to Virginia in Ohio County 23 Oct 1777. Upon his death, hisproperty (after his wife was taken care of) was divided among hisbrothers and sisters, if they were deceased to their heirs. Supposedly,2 brothers and 2 sisters followed him to America. Only 1 sister ismentioned in any information to date. Some believe that John and hiswife, Mary Peyatt/Pyatt, had no children. Both of them are buried inStone Church Cemetery, Elm Grove, Ohio Co., near Wheeling, West Virginia.
