MRS. JANE EADIE, AT 102; OLDEST NATIVE ISLANDER
Staten Island lost its oldest native resident Saturday when Mrs. Jane Eliza Eadie, 102, died in her home at 952 Post Ave., Port Richmond.
Mrs. Eadie, who was born in Travis shortly after the first inauguration of Abraham Lincoln, received a congratulatory card from the late President John F. Kennedy when she reached her 100th birthday, June 1, 1960.
Throughout the years, Mrs. Eadie maintained a sense of humor and her friends often were surprised at her memory, even for details younger people are likely to forget.
She was an avid reader all her life, and even in her late years was able to crochet and watch television. She said, on her 102nd birthday, that she wore glasses only for reading.
Except for a few years in Jersey City, Mrs. Eadie lived her entire life on Staten Island. When she was 89, she wanted to go on her first airplane ride but was not allowed to because of an ear ailment.
The last of eight children of Noah Selleck Decker and Catherine Braisted Decker, she was the widow of Edward Monteith Eadie, Island lawyer and school teacher, who died 43 years ago.
She is survived by a son, DeWitt; a daughter, Mrs. Della Egbert; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
