William (Piatt)

William and Catherine Piatt are found on the 1820 census of Clark County,Ohio, along with John Piatt. Around 1841 William had moved to CrawfordCounty, Missouri. William married second Elizabeth Bennett on January 3,1850, in Crawford County. The last mention of William Piatt is on the1850 census of Crawford County where he is listed as 60 years old, abasket maker and born in Virginia.

The parents of William are not known at this time but he was born at sucha time that he cannot be far removed from his probable ancestry in NewJersey. The names William and Benjamin are oft used among Piatt families, and as such, only further the confusion. Anyone who can shed light onWilliam's parentage, please reply.

Avis Eggers

Avis Eggers married Benjamin Pyatt on Aug 19, 1833 in Putnam County,Indiana. It appears that the Eggers family came to Indiana from NorthCarolina before 1820. Avis was born c1814 in Ohio and died 1894 inCrawford County, Missouri. Soon after their marriage (c1841), Benjaminand Avis moved to Crawford County, Missouri, with Benjamin's father,William, where their descendants still live. They were some of the earlysettlers of south Crawford County and settled in the area which is called"Pyatt Hollow" which is how it received it's name.

After Benjamin died in 1853, Avis married on 5-11-1854 his youngerbrother, Elijah. Elijah was born c1827 in Ohio. Avis died c14 Feb 1894 atthe home of her son, William. Reverend W J Todd preached the funeral andshe was buried in the Charlie Martin Cemetery.

Ava Clara Woolsey (daughter of Sarah Pyatt born 1839 who was the daughterof Avis Eggers Pyatt), wrote in 1994 in a letter to Michael Pyatt "Mygrandmother [Avis Eggers Pyatt] was dark complected (as many of the oldPyatts were) and a small wiry woman; a very clean housekeeper who sang asshe did her work (On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand, Will There Be AnyStars in My Crown, How Tedious and Tasteless the Hours). Had the high'Woolsey' temper, but yet a Saint. Her brother, John, was the cut-up. Hethrew the geese out of the upstairs window and at age 16 asked the schoolteacher to go with him. She replied 'When I take a boy to raise, I'll letyou know.' They went to the Woolsey school 4 miles south of Steelville.Francis Marion started to school and when the teacher asked his name heanswered 'Merry Frank'. Grandma (Ava) took over the household duties when8 or 10 years old. She had about a 4th grade education but taught me toread at an early age. John Hill Pyeatt, the basket maker, had twobrothers; Andrew and George. They lived in primitive log cabins -separately. My grandmother bought the basket about 1939 - 55 years ago. Ithink they were basically religious, lived alone and bothered no one.John Hill was very dark (I believe there was Indian blood). My Aunts evenwere swarthy complected." http://www.angelfire.com/ar/pyeatt/Woolsey.htmlNote from Sandra: Avis was actually an Eggers, but Ava Clara Woolseycalls all of the Pyatts "swarthy complected". Is it possible that boththe Eggers and the Pyatts had Native American in their families? (Perhapsfrom Sally Rash on the Eggers side.) If so, assuming our record of theEggers is accurate, then it is probable that Sally Rash was a fullblooded Native American.

It appears that the Eggers family came to Indiana from North Carolinabefore 1820. Soon after their marriage, Benjamin and Avis moved toCrawford County, Missouri, with Benjamin's father, William, where theirdescendants still live. They were some of the early setters of southCrawford County. http://www.angelfire.com/ar/peyatt/BenjOH.html
