".......Hoyt, in his history, published in 1824, says that the bones of
the slain were still occasionally found protruding from the sandy knoll where
the battle began. Mr Hubbard relates that twenty men were killed with their
leader. Mr. Russell, in his list says sixteen, and gives the names of eleven.
[That list includes Joseph Dickinson]."

Joseph was probably born in England. Joseph lived in Wethersfield until his
father removed to Hadley, MA in 1659 (age 27). He returned to Wethersfield and
in Dec 1661 occupied land which he had bought of John Graves the previous
February. He resided in Northampton, MA from 1664-1674. He then removed to
Northfiedl, MA. Joseph served in Captain Beer's company, King Phillip's War
and in 1683 the town of Northfield granted 50 acres to the heirs of Joseph as
he was killed by the Indians while trying to relieve the Fort at Northfield.
In a book entitled Soldiers of King Phillip's War, published in 1824 it says
that the bones of the slain were still occasionally found protruding from the
sandy knoll where the battle began. Mr. Hubbard relates that twenty (20) men
were killed with their leader. Mr. Russell, in his list says sixteen (16) and
gives the names of eleven, which includes Joseph Dickinson. The widow of
Joseph removed to Wethersfield. She married, second, John, son of Robert and
Magery Rose of Wethersfield and Branford, CT. Phebe was third wife.
