William M. Shilling was enlisted as a private in Company K of the 30th regiment of the , , Ohio, USA. Vol. Infantry on Aug 22, 1861.
He mustered in on the 26th of Aug 1861 at Camp Chase,Ohio, USA.. The regiment fought in the Battle of Bull Run in Aug 1862.Based on this action, William filed for a disability pension for a disease of the head on Sept 18, 1884. The pension was denied. William was shot in the arm during the battle of Antietam, Sept 17, 1862. The injury was severe enough to cause the arm to be amputated at the shoulder joint.
He was discharged Dec 16, 1862 in Washington D.C. with a total disability.
