John Hurff

John Hurff was baptised as "Johannes Harph" born Feb 2, sponsers
Joh. Balthaser Harph and wife Catherina, Information on the life
of John Hurff is very meager. In the will of David Roe,
2-14-1738 he left "to John Hurff a watch". On 3-31-1789, he was
a witness togeather with Elizabeth Hedger and Jacob Williams to
the deed conveying fifty acres of land from John Hedger, Excr.
to Conrad Hurff, which had formerly belonged to David Roe, and
was purchased 1746 of Walter griffiths and was part of an
original 192 acres. On Jan9, 1792 John Hurff purchased for
himself seventeen acres and 17 perches of land from Matthias
Bingman and wife Elizabeth of Deptford Township. The deed
states for "3 A 1/4 and 32 perch of land surveyed to Jonathan
Williams, which Jonathan Morgan, Adm'r to said Williams and 7
A's 1/4 and 25 perches from John Hedger to said Matthias
Bingman for £11: 5 sh.' The witnesses to the deed were John
Williams and Conrad Hurff. This peice of land was bounded by
Sommers, D. Bates, and land formerly of Walter Griffiths. in
Deptford township. This land in 1867 was the property of Thomas
Simpkins.
In 1805 when conrad Hurff made his will he left his son Johnm
Hurff £5. He had probably given John his share whe he purchased
this land and helped him get established, he certainly had
something to do with it for he signed as one of the witness to
the transaction. In Nov.1792 heacted as one of the appraisers
for the estate of william biggins of Gloucester County who had
dies intestate. Daniel bates had been appointed administrator
on Oct. 22, 1792. By Nov.1792 the New Jersey Legislature
passed an entirely new militia law. Under this act all able
bodied men between the ages of 18 and45 years had the privilege
of either enrolling in the county militia or paying annual tax
of 3 dollars. In the list for Deptford Township, Gloucester
County Militia we find the names of "John Hurf" and "Henry
Hurf," and in greenwich township we find the name of "william
Hooff" (Notes on Old Glo. Co., by F> H> Stewart, P.49 &50, Vol
3.
From the records at St. John's P.E. Church, Chews Landing, N.J.
4-24-1793john Hurff purchased a burial lot. The fact that he
had purchased a piece of land, and later purchased a burial lot
would lead one to belie that he had been married previous to
these transactions, but if he were, the name of the wife is
unkown. We do know that on Dec. 26, 1809 he married Elizabeth
Dilkes. In a record of an "Old Coffin Book" at the Gloucester
County Historical Society, there is a note of a coffin sold
Sept. 18, 1815 for "John Hurf,child" and again Apr.24, 1825
"John Hurf, child." Traditions in the family state that"willie
died from whooping cough when quite a big boy." If this is the
case, then william was the child who died 1825 and would then be
fifteen years old. Who then was the other child who died in
1815? Was it a child by the first marriage? As far as known
JohnHurff lived for the most partof his life in and around what
is now known as Turnersville. during his later days he was
inclined to do childish things. One time when Mary Elizabeth
and John Dilkes his grandchildren were playing in the barn, John
Hurff slipped up the ladder to the hayloft and hid something
under the hay. The children frightened, told this to their
parents who on investigation found that the old man had hidden
his money there and never thought of it again. He was then a
man past 85 years of age. When John Hurff died has not been
recorded. In the dilkes family there is a round ball shaped
piece of mahogany which came from the foot of a dresser of
Johnand Elizabeth Hurff. This has been used in the family for
generations as a stocking darner and posses manya needle prick.
It is now in possession of Mary E. Jarvis. St. Petersburg, FL.

Priscilla Hurff

Priscilla Hurff was originally called Ursula Harff. In 1785
when David Roe made his will he stipulated therein: "To my wife
Osella, the house and 20 acres of land where I live, and, after
her death, to the heirs of my body; but if she leaves no heirs,
then to Osella Hurf, daughter od Conrad Hurf." That she did not
recieve the land is shown by the quit claim signed by Issac
Bedelion and his wife Osella, who signed off for £100. Ursula,
which is German, later becameknown as Priscilla Beckley, and
leaves to her £20. She Married David Bechtle, later spelled
Beckley, at the German Reformed Church, Philadelphia, PA. He
was a wheelwright and had his shop on the Westerly side of what
was then termed the "Landing Road" and now known as Black Horse
Pike, Blackwood, NJ. The land owned by him at this location
contained two acres and ran back a distance of 541.20 feet. She
is Probably buried in the Blackwood (NJ)Presbyterian Church

Henry Hurff

Henry Hurff born September 13, 1768 so states the slip of paper
found with the birth dates of the children noted thereon. The
early days of his life were spent on the homestead of his
father, Conrad Hurff, at what is today called Turnersville. He
was the second son of the family and was named by his father in
his will of 1805 as one of the Executors of his estate. He
shared equally with his brothers George and Isaac. On March 31,
1879 Conrad Hurff purchased a piece of land from John Hedger,
executor for the David Roe Estate. Afterward an agreement was
made with the owner of the adjoining land, John Williams, to
draw a boundary line between the two properties with Conrad's
sons Henry and George to witness where the boundaries lines were
placed.
An unrecorded deed dated Jan. 1, 1807 states that Henry and
George Hurff, executors of Conrad Hurff, deceased, sold to
comply with the conditions of the will 197 1/2 acres. Thomas
Wilkins having been the highest bidder at public auction bought
the land for $1471.25.
This same land was bought back again by Henry and George Hurff
after the legacies had been paid. Henry took the land on the
south side of Stephens Run or the "homestead" and George, the
land on the north side of Stephens Run.
It was assumed that Henry Hurff had always lived on the
homestead farm, but from a deed dated June 20. 1809 Henry Hurff
is represented as "of Woodwich Township, Gloucester County." It
could have been that he married a girl from that vicinity and
established a home there, returning to Deptford Township and the
home farm, after his father's estate was settled and a division
of the property agreed upon between he and George his brother.
He continued farming and lived to take his grandson the third
Henry upon his knee and show him the interesting features about
his desk, still a treasured possession in the family.
"Henry Hurff died February 21, 1853 in his 85th year near
Blackwood" so states a newspaper item. He was buried in Bethel
Cemetery, Hurffville, NJ. His tombstone reads "Henry Hurff,
Died Feb. 21, 1853. Age 84 years, 5 mos. and 8 days."
No will is found in the Gloucester County Surrogate's Office
for Henry Hurff nor does a distribution of his estate show up.
What maiden name of his wife Nancy was, there is no record. Who
her parents were or her home town are unknown. As Nancy Hurff
she made her will and five years after Henry's death she died
Jan. 18, 1858, and is buried in Bethel Cemetery along side of
Henry.
Her will was proved Jan. 27, 1858 and it reads:
In the name of God, Amen. I, Nancy Hurff, of the Township of
Washington, in The County of Camden and State of New Jersey
being of sound mind memory and understanding for which blessing
I thank God, do make and publish this my last will and testament
in manner of following:
First - it is my will and I do order that all my just debts and
funeral expenses be duly paid and satisfied as soon as
conveniently can be after my decease.
Item - I give and bequeath unto my two daughters Ann and
Elizabeth Wood all my moneys cash on hand or due me on bonds,
etc., after the above expenses are paid to be equally divided
between the same.
Item - second - I do give and bequeath unto my granddaughter
Emeline Hurff my bureau and bed.
Lastly I do leave my son Joseph Hurff as Executor to this my
last will and testament. signed, sealed, published and delivered
by the said Nancy Hurff to be her testament and last will in the
presence of us.

Andrew D. Turner Nancy X Hurff (SEAL)

Evidently her right name was Ann, as it so appears on her
tombstone at Bethel Cemetery, Nancy was a familiar form of Ann.
Her stone reads "Ann Hurff died Jan. 18, 1858, aged 85 years."

When Conrad Hurff made his will in August, 1805, he names
Priscilla Beckley and his son John, then he states: Item: "I

twenty pounds to be equally divided amongst them, share and

Elizabeth Hurff and her husband Rev. Thomas Davidson were
pioneer class members of Carpenter's Landing (now Mantua)
Church. They were also organizers of the Asbury M. E. Church at
Repaupo, and were original members of the Swedesboro M.E. Church
about 1830. He was a preacher and trustee of the Clarksboro
Church and they were also original members of the Methodist
Protestant Church at Bridgeport. All the children were born in
Swedesboro where the house is still standing (1951). Rev.
Thomas and Elizabeth Davidson later moved to Clarksboro. This
home was opposite Eglington Cemetery and is also standing. Both
are buried in the Methodist Cemetery at Clarksboro, NJ.

George Hurff

GEORGE HURFF, born 7 -22-1780, died 9-1-1871 in his 92nd year.
In going through the Baptismal records of St. Micheals Church on
page 188 for the year 1780 there was noted "Conrad Harf
residing in New Jersey and Anna his wife, JOHANN GEORGE baptised
8 Nouember who was born 22 Juli." This register was written in
German script. It is the first instance that the committee knew
that his name was Johann George as he had always been known as
just 'George Hurff.' He was born and raised on the property
purchased by his grandfather Johann Baltus Hurff in 1760 from
David Roe, over which Conrad Hurff, his father had so much
litigation. George and Henry, sons of Conrad were appointed the
executors of the estate by will of their father.
An unrecorded deed in the custody of Mrs. Richard C. Kirk, a
granddaughter of George Hurff, dated "January 1, 1807, Henry
Hurf and George Hurf, Executors of the last Will and Testament
of Conrad Hurff, deceased, convey to Thomas Wilkins of Woodbury,
after a public auction held October 10th, 1806 for $7.50 per
acre 'no person appearing to bid more, the two tracts, to wit:
The tract containing 1221/4 acres, which had formerly been the
homestead of Johann Baltus Hurff; and also the residue of the
tract purchased from the Executors of David Roe, deceased,
'making together in both parcels 1971/2 acres' of which he the
said Conrad Hurff died seized, and which they, the said Henry
and George Hurf, sold at public vendue as aforesaid amounting to
the sum of $1471.25."
Book C of the minutes of the Orphans Court of Gloucester County
page 307 show that Henry and George Hurff, Executors of Conrad
Hurff, deceased, had their account passed- "The like, and
ballance of One thousand six hundred and twenty three dollars
and fifty cents to be disposed according to the Will of
Testator." Evidently Henry and George Hurff buy back the
original lands of their father from Thomas Wilkins. This
transaction seems to have been one of convenience in settling up
of the estate. George Hurff took the land to the north of
Stephens Run for his share of the estate. Here on this tract
which was part of the original survey he built his home, a low
two story frame building similar to other farm houses of its
time. This house was evidently built about 1807 or 08.
George Hurff served on various Committees for Washington
Township during the years 1838 to 1848. He was a farmer and a
good one for his day.

George also had a little sporting blood in his veins. He kept a
pacing mare. He certainly did not keep a good horse just to look
at, and we can figure that a few good races were held among the
owners of horses for the sport. A shoe from this pacer was
nailed over the door of the old work shop, today the shoe is in
possession of Mary Hurff Kirk.
The marriage of George Hurff and Tamson Williams is given in the
Gloucester County Clerk's Records as performed on March 4, 1807
by William Zane, Justice of the Peace. She was the daughter of
Captain Jonathan Williams of the Revolutionary War and Patience
Chew, a daughter of Richard Chew of Deptford Township,
Gloucester County. She was born 4-20-1788.

When Tamson Williams was a small girl she fell in the mill pond
and was saved by her clothing keeping her afloat just before she
reached the flood gates.

Fortunately very old photographs had been saved in the family of
George and Tamson Williams Hurff. There is also preserved a high
beaver hat that George Hurff wore when he attended church and
funerals. This hat was exhibited at the 1949 Hurff Reunion and
the regular collection taken up in it which amounted to $27.14.
George Hurff made his will January 27, 1859, in which he states
he resides in Washington Township, Camden County, N. J. It was
proved Sept. 17, 1871 (Book F. p. 511, Woodbury, N. J.) in part
states:

ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my four daughters, Mary Cole,
Patience Ann Cole, Tamson Nicholson and Catherine Prosser,
Twelve hundred dollars each, to be paid to them by my executors
hereafter named out of my estate.

ITEM: I give devise and bequeath unto my sons, John Hurff,
Isaac Hurff, Thomas W. Hurff, George Hurff, Jr., and Hiram
Hurff, all my lands, tenements, here-ditaments and Real Estate
whatsoever and wheresoever, to be either divided or sold as a
majority of them shall determine to them, their heirs and
assigns forever to be divided between them share and share
alike. Also all my personal estate to be equally divided between
them share and share alike, after first paying thereout the
aforesaid legacies hereinafter bequeathed to my said daughters.

His executors were his sons John and Thomas W. Hurff.

He died Sept. 1-1871 at the age of 91 years 1 mo. and 10 days.
His wife died November 11, 1857 aged 64 years, 7 mos. and I day.
Both are buried in Bethel Cemetery, Hutffville, where their
tombstones still stand. Also four of their children are buried
at the same cemetery Reas, Elizabeth, Jonathan and Henrietta in
the old part of the burial yard.

It has been told in the family that one of George Hurff's
grandsons was rather slow in talking and he feared very much
that the child never would talk. Some one reminded him that all
the others in the family talked, he answered- "Did you ever know
a gal that didn't talk?"

In that day matches were not on the market yet often times the
fire would go out and it would be necssary to have some live
coals to start a fire. One of the sons would have to go over to
Henry Hurff's on the other side of Stephen's Run to 'borrow'
some live coals and run back with them to start a fire.

Ann T Hurff

ANN HURFF, born 1-29-1784 was the youngest daughter of Conrad
and Ann Hurff. She is named in her father's will of 1805 as
'Ann Hurff' and was bequeathed the sum of £50. Evidently she
was still at the homestead with her father and probably was the
homemaker for him and her brothers, George and Isaac.

After the death of her father and the settlement of the estate
we find from the original marriage certificate still preserved
that Ann T. Hurff married Ephriam S. Cheeseman on Jan. 22 1807.
The certificate reads:-

"Be it remembered that personally appeared before me the

The records state he was a son of Ephriam and Mary Cheesman who
had their farm at Lower Landing. Ephriam Cheesman is a direct
decendant of Richard Cheesman who was an attorney in New York as
early as 1682 and purchased land in Gloucester County, New
Jersey. about 1700

Ann Hurff Cheesman died 2-27-1855. Of the death of Ephraim S.
Cheesman we have no positive date. We find no will or
administration for Ephraim S. Cheesman nor where he sold the
balance of his father's property. Ann Cheesman of Woolwich
Township, Gloucester County left an undated will -wherein she
left to the children of her son David Chees-
man, to wit: Thomas, Benjamin, Sarah Ann and Hannah Jane
Cbeesman $25. each. To her daughter Mary Ann Hurff wife of
Thomas Hurff the sum of $110.
The residue of her property she bequeathed unto her sons Bowman
and Nehemiah and her daughter Drusilla H. Roberts wife of Nathan

Isaac Hurff

ISAAC HURFF, born in 1787 on the old Hurff Homestead at
Turnerville where he was trained in the principles and practices
of farming and received his rudimentary education in the rural
school of that community. After the death of his father, in
1805 and the settlement of the estate by his older brothers
George and Henry, Isaac Hurff seems to have taken his money from
the settlement and started out for himself in another locality,
for we find him established in vicinity of Swedesboro. Just why
he went to that neighborhood, or how long he had been there
before he made his first purchase of land is hard at this day to
say, but we know that he died seized of considerable estate. He
left no will and on Dec. 26, 1849 the Court appointed three
commissioners to divide his real estate, they were George Craft,
Arthur H. Greeman and John B. Hilyard. The commissioners
reported that the only effectual way of making an equal division
for all of his children would he to sell at public auction his
holdings. This was done at the house of Aaron Hurff, on the
Homestead in the Township of Woolwich, Gloucester County. The
first piece of ground to be sold was that along Oldmans Creek of
10 and 50/100's acres that Isaac Hurff had purchased of Josiah
Gill on Sept. 15,1827, this was purchased by Henry Hurff, a son
for $987.00; and another tract on the public road from
Bridgeport to Battentown of 10 and 25/00's acres for which Henry
Hurff bid $654.56.
Aaron Hurff seems to have bought in the Homestead place of 205
acres along Oldmans Creek for $8815. which Isaac Hurff had
purchased of James S. Gill, August 8, 1839 and another tract of
350 acres that Isaac Hurff had purchased of Elizabeth T. Groof
by deed dated May 2, 1846, for which he gave $3450.

John Ashcraft purchased 163 acres for $6357 that Isaac had
purchased of Jacob Roberts, March 5, 1846 and John C. Turner
paid $653.56 for 23 and 25/100's acres purchased of William.
Ambruster. Thomas Ballinger gave $210. for 94/100'8 of an acre
that had been purchased of Joseph Knissel, Nov. 17, 1846 and
John James gave $3268.95 for 88 and 55/100's acres on the
Bridgeport-Battentown road that had been purchased July 25, 1833
of Joseph B. Willetts. Restore Turner purchased 27 acres for
$543.37.
All of these transactions were quit claimed by Isaac Hurff's
widow, Ann Hurff, July 1, 1850.
Isaac Hurff seems to have been one of the most prosperous
agriculturists of that locality. In 1849 he visited his sons who
had settled in Illinois. On his return trip he contracted
cholera, and died in Terra Haute, Indiana. He was then sixty two
years and twenty days old. He died 24, Jul-1849 and was brought
to Swedesboro and buried in the old Ebenezer Cemetery just off
the Auburn Road.
After the death of his wife Isaac Hurff married (2) in 1822 ,
Ann Jaggard, born 11-12-1797, died 8-30-1868 a sister of his
first wife. She died near Center Square in her 72nd year.
