William Walter

On William's tombstone is written "Mark the perfect man
and behold the upright

is Peace"

William Walter after residing a short time in Goshen, Connecticut, settled in
Norfolk, where he was the possessor of one proprietor's right in 1755. He was
appointed to take care of the timber of the town and in 1756 had collected
from trespassers thirty pounds and fourteen shillings. By vote of the town
this money was applied for preaching of the gospel in Norfolk. William Walter
was elected first representative from Norfolk to the General Court in October
1777 (one of the two first deputies), and again in January 1778. He settled on
the south side of Haystack mountain in Norfolk and is described as a man of
great piety and large influence in the community.
