Jacob (III) (Piatt)

Pennsylvania Indian Trader

Jacob Pyatt
Jacob Pyeatt (IV) was born c1749 (or c1758) in Path Valley, PA, and was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth ?Dunham Pyeatt the was the grandson of Jacob and Jean Paul Pyeatt (this Jacob was the Pennsylvania Indian Trader).
Jacob (born c1749) moved to Ohio County, VA, before the Revolution. He joined William Rogers Clark's expeditions and then lived in Jefferson County, KY. In 1788 he went to the Natchez are of Spanish Louisiana, where he lived at Bayou Pierre (now Vicksburg) until at least 1794, after his son (or brother) Benjamin had been arrested and imprisoned; possibly went to Missouri with his son (or brother) John; returned to one of the family homesteads in Ohio Co., VA; and then moved again with his married children and with his brother (or son) Benjamin to the Northwest Territory (Adams Co., OH), where he died after 1816.

John Pyeatt of Missouri may have been a son of Jacob (IV). If so he would have been born about 1765 or later.

Alternatively, John may have been Jacob's brother and a son of Jacob (III) [No, not given in will. MCP]. In this case, he could have been born in the 1750s. This John in 1777 took an oath of allegiance in Ohio County, VA, and in 1779 he served in the militia of Ohio County, VA. However, this John was not listed in the 1780 will (proved in 1784) of Jacob Pyeatt (III), though it seems unlikely that anyone else could have been his father. Nor was he subsequently listed on any records of Ohio County, VA, or Washington County, PA. Nevertheless, this John might have been invisible in the documentary record because he lived with his grandfather (who was still alive in 1784) and/or one of his brothers until his move to Missouri.

They may have had an another son, James, b. ca. 1768.

His will was proved on March 31 of that year but was written four years
earlier on 26 Aug 1780. The will is on file in the office of the Prothonotary
in Washington Co PA. But the will was copied into the Will Book, possibly at
the time it was proved, so what is there is not the original paper of the will.
