Garland Zeek was a carpenter at the time of his enlistment in Company F, 5th Regiment Indiana Volunteers Infantry, April 1861, for three months; was in the battle of Rich Mountain, and was discharged at expiration of term of enlistment; re-enlisted in company B 67th Regiment Indiana Volunteers Infantry, October 1861 for three years; was in the battles of Pittsburgh Landing, Perryville,Stone River, Mission Ridge ( where he was wounded); re-enlisted in the same company and Regiment, was in the Battles of Resacca, New Hope Church, Kenesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, Jonesboro and Franklin (where he was again wounded); is still in the service as of May 1865. OBITUARY
Former New Hartford Woman Accidently Shot
Buried Sunday, New Hartford Baptist Church, Rev. Kitterell.

A telephone message came on Wednesday evening of last week from Rochester, Minnesota to Mr. and Mrs. Newton Zeek Telling of the death of their son, Harold's wife caused by an accidental discharged of a shot gun in the hands of her husband. death was instantaneous. Mr. Zeek had been on a hunting trip a few days previous and that evening had been telling his six year old son Bobby how the soldiers carried their their arms in the army and had left it standing in the room.
As Mrs. Zeek was doing her work after the evening meal, She noticed the gun and asked her husband to put it away which he proceeded to do and drawing on the gun case the gun went off striking his wife in the back and she fell dead in his arms. Mr. Zeek supposed the gun to be empty but there was one remaining shell. A woman who lived upstairs in the same house came immediately on the sound of the shot and notified the relatives at once. Bobby, age 6 was the only other witness.
Mr. and Mrs. Newton Zeek left Shell Rock immediately and drove to Spring Valley, Minnesota to the home of their son Howard, where they were met by the stricken husband and little son. After the inquest on Friday the body was brought to Spring Valley and on Sunday to New Hartford for a burial. Relatives of the Zeeks who came with the bereaved family were. Mr and Mrs Howard Zeek and Miss Alice and Maxine Howard, all of Spring Valley.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Baptist Church in New Hartford Conducted by Rev. Robert Kitterell of Waterloo. The music was furnished by Miss Nora Caley and Mrs Sensanbach. Pall Bears were Elmer Tobias, Roger Conklin, Herbert Dix, Harold Barden, Howard Whitcom and Fred Heerts. The Church was filled to over flowing with sorrowing friends and many beautiful flowers gave expression of their sympathy. Minnie Adeline Sells, Daughter of Mr and Mrs Nathan G. Sells was born August 1, 1901, at New Hartford Iowa where she spent her girlhood, In December 1915 she united with the Baptist Church of which she remained a member. She was married May 9, 1925 to Harold Zeek of Shell Rock. to this union was born one son Robert Newton, who with his father mourns the loss of a mother and wife.
Other surviving members of the family are the parents and six sisters, Mrs Ola Brown, Morris, Minnesota, Mrs Neva Case, Mcallister, Wisconsin, Mrs Lyla Card, Parkersburg, Mrs Ruby Wilson, Waterloo, Mrs Viva Bolton, New Hartford, Mrs Hazel Powell, Shell Rock, and 4 brothers, Ira, Wayne, Earl and Harlan all of New Hartford besides many other relatives and friends who deeply sympathize with the stricken family at this time.
