Listed are some partial details of  newspaper items in regards to the deaths of some of those interred at the cemetery.

BRADSHAW

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Thursday 27 July 1916

Obituary

We regret having to record the death at Darwin Hospital at 3am on Sunday morning 23rd inst., of an old NT pioneer in the person of Mr Joseph Bradshaw, of Bradshaw’s Run, Victoria River, NT. The deceased gentleman’s wife and only son reside in Victoria.

…….We believe one of these wishes was that his body should eventually be laid to rest alongside that of his brother Fred Bradshaw, murdered by blacks some years ago, which lies under a cairn of stones on one of the rugged mountain peaks near Bradshaw’s Station, in the Victoria River district. The two brothers spent many years together in that district. The funeral took place at the 2½ Mile Cemetery, the cortege leaving the hospital a little after 4pm. The funeral service was read by the Rev. C H Massey, Anglican Church. Several old friends assisted in carrying the coffin to the graveside. The coffin bore several wreaths sent by friends and the inscribed silver plate showed deceased’s age to be 62 years. etc

davidson

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Thursday 26 December 1912

Mr Davidson, chief engineer of the ss Empire, died rather suddenly on board that vessel early on Tuesday morning shortly before arrival at this port, and was buried at the 2½ Mile Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon. The cause of death was heart failure

FINNISS

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Friday 23 October 1908

The Late Frederick Robe Finniss

On Saturday last, 16th inst., the above gentleman passed away very quietly, at between 10 & 11 am at his private residence in Smith street…….We believe the immediate cause of death was an apoplectic seizure. We understand he ate and apparently enjoyed a good breakfast on the morning of the 16th and before 6.30pm the same evening his body had been interred at the 2½ Mile Cemetery……The deceased although only 61 years of age had probably a longer term of years to his credit as a resident of this territory than anyone else now living with perhaps one or two exceptions…We understand Mr Finniss who was the youngest of his family has a brother and two sisters still living in Adelaide.

HUGHES

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Thursday 22 March 1917

News and notes

A fatal motor car accident occurred at the corner of Bennett & Cavenagh Sts., on Saturday evening when a man named

Sydney Hughes was knocked down by a motor car driven by a Russian named Koklyn…………He died during the night and was conveyed and was conveyed the following morning to the hospital morgue, from whence the body was conveyed on Monday forenoon for burial at the 2½ Mile Cemetery. The unfortunate deceased has been resident in Darwin for some considerable time and was noted for his intemperate habits. He was at one time billiard marker at the Hotel Victoria. An inquiry was held before the coroner G W Stretton Esq., SM on Monday, the finding being that the cause of deceased’s death was alcoholism, accelerated by coming into contact with a motor car and that no blame attached to any person

LAWRIE

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Friday 15 February 1901

Obituary

Lawrie-For some time past Mr W J A Lawrie better known to Territorians as “Nim Lawrie” had been ill and about a week ago, feeling worse he went into the Palmerston Hospital…..The funeral took place on Tuesday morning at 9o’clock, a very large number of the deceased’s personal friends attending to pay their last tribute of respect to their old companion……..”Nim Lawrie” was born on Feb. 2nd 1873 and had consequently just passed his 28th birthday….As a musician he was head and shoulders above his Territory rivals, as a sport he was a keen participator of every thing going and as a man he was the soul of integrity and honour.

lee

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Thursday 30 January 1913

News and Notes

A man named Alfred Lee died at the hospital on Sunday forenoon and was buried at the 2½ Mile Cemetery the same afternoon. The immediate cause of death was peritonitis, said to be the result of an accident on the Daly River Demonstration Farm some weeks ago. We believe Lee first came to the Territory some six or seven years ago.

luxton

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Thursday 13 March 1913

News and Notes

A large number of townspeople attended the funeral of the late Mr Edwin Luxton on the afternoon of Wednesday the 5th inst. There were 16 vehicles, besides several cyclists and one or two horsemen. Very heavy rain had fallen about midday, and the road to the 2½ Mile Cemetery was sloppy in places, but although the sky was lowering there was no further rain during the afternoon. One gruesome and painful feature which has frequently marked previous interments taking place during the wet season was fortunately absent……

MCKECHNIE

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Friday 7 August 1908

Sudden Deaths-

Early on Wednesday morning another sudden and unexpected death took place at the Terminus Hotel, Cavenagh St when a fine big man in the prime of his life named McKechnie, after complaining to a bystander of internal pains, suddenly fell to the floor face downwards and expired within a few moments……The deceased is believed to have a son in Adelaide but an examination of his papers has failed to reveal any definite facts as to his relatives or connections. Deceased came from Sydney…..The deceased’s remains were to be conveyed to the 2½ Mile Cemetery at 4pm on Wednesday.

MULLIN

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Friday 21 January 1910

News and notes

…..At the Palmerston Hospital on Friday last, a boy aged only 19 named Thomas Patrick Mullin, passed away quietly after being only a few days under treatment in that institution. We understand the immediate cause of death was Brights disease. The deceased lad, who came here from Qld with his parents several years ago has been for the last 3 years with Mr H E Schunke of Pine Creek, learning the trade of a wheelwright and blacksmith. Deceased was interred at the 2½ Mile Cemetery on Friday afternoon last, the funeral services being conducted by the Rev. Father Cross

PORTER

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Friday 20 May 1910

News and notes

An old NT identity, Mr Porter died at the Palmerston Hospital at 5am on the morning of the 13th inst., and was buried at the 2½ Mile Cemetery at about 5.30pm the same afternoon

RATTRAY

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Friday 13 November 1908

A Sudden Death. A painful sensation and considerable surprise was occasioned in town on Sunday morning last by news of the death at the Palmerston Hospital of Mr G S Rattray, a well known member of the overland telegraph staff…..Mr Rattray arrived here some years ago from England and has been several years in the O.T. Department. During the greater part of this time he has resided in Palmerston and only about seven months ago the poor fellow was married to the youngest daughter of one of the Territory’s earliest and best known pioneers (the late Mr Jas Pickford)…..Deceased was buried at the 2½ Mile Cemetery at about 6pm on Sunday evening, the coffin being followed to the gravesite by about sixty residents including the Government Resident, and most of the railway people residing at the 2½ Mile…..The deceased was only 31 years of age and sincere and general sympathy will be felt for the young wife so prematurely widowed.

STOTT

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Friday 15 February 1901

Obituary

Mrs Stott wife of M C Stott of Burrundie who had been ailing for some weeks past, died at the residence of Mr F R Finnis, Palmerston on Monday morning last, February 11. Mrs Stott came out from the “old country” some 15 months ago and was married in Palmerston to Mr R Stott a much respected police officer in the NT service…….The first part of the burial ceremony was performed at the Roman Catholic Church by Rev. Father O’Brien and the cortege then proceeded to the 2½ Mile Cemetery where the remains were interred. etc

SUTCLIFFE

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Thursday 9 January 1913

In Memoriam

In loving memory of my dearly beloved husband S E Sutcliffe M.D., who died January 9th 1912 at Pine Creek NT, late of Bridlington, England.

- Mother and Eddie

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Thursday 26 July 1917

One Among Many

(part of an article written due to communication received by Mrs M A Sutcliffe, “Cuba House”, 10 Trinity Road, Bridlington, Yorkshire. Newspaper articles enclosed on

her son. “I have many friends in the NT who I am sure will feel greatly interested in the news of my dear and only son. We spent many years at Pine Creek and my dear

husband lies buried at the 2½ Mile Cemetery.

TUCKWELL

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Tuesday 9 August 1921

Death of an old Pioneer

The death occurred at 4.30 pm on Saturday last, at her residence in Mitchell St of Mrs Tuckwell who has gradually been failing for some time past. She was the last survivor of those who arrived here in the early seventies in connection with the construction of the overland telegraph line. She was, we understand 85 years of age and had resided certainly in the Territory with the exception of one brief visit to her eldest son, for nearly half a century. Her husband died many years ago and Mrs Tuckwell was left to face the world with a family of young children of whom we believe Mrs V V Brown, widow of the late Mr V V Brown, is the only surviving member still resident in the Territory, but there are several grandchildren and great grandchildren many of them in this tropical land. The deceased lady was born in London, January 8th 1836 and arrived in Australia, March 3rd 1855. The funeral took place at 10.30am on Sunday morning, the deceased being interred alongside the grave of  her late daughter, Mrs Arnold, and in the same row as her late husband, Mr Tuckwell at the 2½ Mile Cemetery……….

Watson

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Friday 23 August 1907

News and Notes

A correspondent states that a few weeks ago a man named Watson who came down to the Palmerston Hospital from Horseshoe Creek for medical treatment, died in that institution and was subsequently buried out at the 2½ Mile Cemetery “like a dog” ie., without any funeral service being read over his remains,. If this be so, it argues culpable carelessness somewhere. The presumption is, of course, that no minister of religion was informed that the man had died.

WOODFIELD

Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Friday 7 August 1908

Sudden Deaths-

A man named John Donald Woodfield, between 50 and 60 yrs of age died on Tuesday afternoon in Mitchell St, opposite the residence of Mr Paul Foelsche, whilst being conveyed in a vehicle to the Palmerston Hospital. ………Woodfield was a big man of splendid physique and is believed to have been at one time in a good social position. Deceased who was to be buried at 4pm on Wednesday is understood to have left a wife and family
