Note on Husband: Matthew + of ALSACE

Matthew of Alsace (c. 1130[citation needed] โ€“ 1173) was the second son of Thierry, Count of Flanders and Sibylla of Anjou. By marriage to Marie de Boulogne, he became Count of Boulogne, in 1160. They were divorced in 1170, but he continued as Count until his death.

Their elder daughter was Ida, Countess of Boulogne. Their other daughter, Maud of Boulogne, married Henry I, Duke of Brabant.

He was a supporter of Henry the Young King, and received lands in England. He died fighting at the siege of Trenton (now Neufchatel-en-Bray), in the 1173โ€“74 revolt of Henry II of England's sons, under the leadership of Philip of Flanders. Wounded by a crossbow bolt, he did not recover.[1]

Note on Wife: Marie + of BOULOGNE

Marie of Boulogne (1136 โ€“ 1182 in St Austrebert, Montreuil, France) was the Countess of Boulogne from 1159 to 1170.

Marie was born to King Stephen of England and his wife Matilda I, Countess of Boulogne. At an early age, she was apparently placed in a convent, but she became her childless brother William's heir in 1159. Matthew of Alsace (c.1130-1173)abducted the heiress from her convent in 1160, and made her his wife in defiance of her religious vows, thus becoming Count of Boulogne and co-ruler. The marriage was annulled in 1169, and she re-entered the religious life at St. Austrebert, Montreuil, where she died in 1182.ยค [1] Her former husband Matthew continued to reign as Count of Boulogne until his death in 1173, when their daughter Ida became the Countess. Marie's second daughter Mathilde of Flanders married Henry I, Duke of Brabant in 1179 and they produced six children.
