Note on Husband: Luke * MALOON
Luke was taxed at "Bloody Point", Dover, Strafford co., NH from 1667 to 1672. Records also list him as being of Dover in November 1677 and on the Dover tax list circa 1680. His Portsmouth, Rockingham co., tax rate was "abated" in March 1695/6. However, in 1710, he is listed as being of Hampton, Rockingham co., NH and was living in Greenland, Rockingham co., NH in 1723 [1]. During that year, he deeded property at Greenland mainly to his son Joseph, although he names his sons Samuel, Luke, Mark & Nathaniel in the deed as well.
TOWN SERVICE Luke was a good neighbor in the Dover area. William Gray signed a lease for land lying south of Turning Point from William Shackford "at Luke Maloon's house" in 1681[1]. He and John Partridge stood surety as bondsmen for tavern-keeper John Johnson in 1689. He is listed as one of the signers at Durham, Newington, Greenland & Portsmouth -- all in Rockingham co. -- of a Petition of New Hampshire Inhabitants for equal privileges with those of Massachusetts on 10 August 1692. He also served on the Jury, presumably at Dover, in 1694[1].
On 20 November 1677 when Luke was 32, he married Hannah CLIFFORD[1,3], daughter of John CLIFFORD & Sarah [surname not known], in Hampton, Rockingham co., NH[1,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15]. There is a notation in Dow's History of Hampton which reads: "Hannah CLIFFORD = d/o John Sr. and Sarah, b. 15 Apr 1649 at Hampton, NH; marr 20 Nov 1677". Torrey says they were married in either Salisbury, Essex co., MA or Dover, Strafford co., NH and lists it under "MALOON/MALONE/MALLOON".
The Ordinance Index of June 2002 also lists a son "James", born "abt 1695". He not mentioned ]so far in any other source, but would fill the space in childbearing between Abigail (born ca. 1690) and Samuel (born ca. 1698). He may have died in infancy, if he existed at all[1]. 3
