John Haynes was born about 1550 in England, possibly in Sherborne, Dorset. The marriage of John Haynes and Alice Lambert is found in the parish register of St. Mary's Church in Sherbourne, Dorsetshire, England. John and Alice had at least six children, possibly all born in Sutton Mandeville, Wiltshire. At least one of his sons, Walter, emigrated to New England. Alice wrote her will, saying she was a widow, on March 2, 1621, in Semley, Wiltshire. Therefore, John was dead before 1621. He possibly died in Semley. His burial is unknown. ⁵

Alice Hayne, widow, was living at Semley, Wiltshire, when she made her will, and where she was buried. Shaftsbury or Shaston, co. Dorset, is five miles from Semley, Wiltshire, the latter being near Sutton MandeviiIe and Wardour Castle, Wiltshire, and is ten miles from Salisbury in that county. Her will was dated 2 March 1620-1, the inventory taken, 23 February 1623-4, and the will was proved by Walter Hayme, the Exr. Mar. 2, 1623-4. It was signed in the presence of Marmaduke Read, Walter Hayne, and John Blandford.

The following is a copy of the will of Alice Hayne, widow, of Semley, co. Wilts, England, the mother of Walter Haynes, born 1583, who with wife Elizabeth, five children and three servants, came from Sutton MandeviIle, Wiltshire, England, in 1638, in the ship "Confidence," to Boston, and settled at Sudbury, Mass., where he died 14 February, 1664-5. This will is written on one page of one leaf folio paper, not signed. It is preserved among the Salisbury Wills, P. P. C. London (Archdeaconry of Sarum). Dated 2d March, 1620-l; proved by Walter Hayne the Exr., 2d March, 1623-4.

THE WILL OF ALICE HAYNE, THE MOTHER OF WALTER HAYNES

 

This Will was found in 1879, during the research in England, among the old Wills of Salisbury (Co. Wilts), which are now kept in the Prerogative Consistory Court, at Westminster, London, for safety. See Chapter on English Research, page 9. Semley is about four and three-fourths miles from Shafton, Dorset, where Walter Haynes owned a house, and not far from Sutton Mandeville, where he lived, just at the time he sailed for America. This Will is written on one page of one leaf folio paper, and not signed. This may be because it is a copy of the original, or it may be because legal forms were sometimes neglected in those days. As will be seen at the end of the Inventory, it is recorded there: "Will Proved in the Court of the Archdeacon of Saruni (Sarum was the Latin name for Salisbury) by the Ex’or named, the 2 March, 1623."

 

The Will: "In the name of God Amen, the 2d daye of March in the xviijth yere of the reigne of our Sovraigne Lord King James and the yere of our Lord God One thousand Sixe hundred and twentie. I Alce Hayme of prfecte memorie praising God doe make this my laste Will and testament in maner and forme following. ffirst I bequethe my Soule to our Lorde Jesus Christ my only Savior and redemer and my bodie to be buried in the Church yeard of Semblie, It: I geve to the same Church vj. Will Proved in the Court of the Archdeacon of Sarum by the Ex’or named, the 2 March, 1623. The "partlett" mentioned was a band or ruff for the neck. "Posnet" a porringer. "Stinger" an extinguisher (for candles). We have not been able to find the meaning of "beins" or "haingrells."

Semley is a parish in Wiltshire, four and three fourths miIes from Hindon (S. by W.), and about the same distance E.N.E. from Shaftsbury or Shaston in Dorsetshire, shire, and in the vicinity of Sutton Mandeville and Wardour Castle. Elizabeth, the daughter of Walter Hayme named in the will, probably was the daughter that married Roger Goard, and remained in England, named in her father's will made 25 May, 1659, proved 4 April, 1665. Thomas, Suffraine and Mary, the only other children of Walter born at the date of his mother's will, came to New England with their parents in 1638. Semley church has been restored, and a recent visit at Semley and at Sutton Mandeville developed no footprints of the Hayne family of 1620. The marriage of John Hayne and Alice Lambert, 23d October, 1575, is found on the Sherburne, Dorset, register, and which may be the marriage of Walter Hayne's parents. Walter Hayne's family in England seem to have belonged to the one writing themselves Hayne and Haine The name being written Hayme in this will proves little as to its correct spelling, the scribes of that day being frequently in error. Alice Lambert was born about 1554 in Semley, Wiltshire, England. She was the daughter of John Lambert and Catherine Packington. On October 23, 1575, she married John Haynes. The marriage of John Haynes and Alice Lambert is found in the parish register of St. Mary's Church in Sherbourne, Dorset, England. Alice and John had at least six children, one or more of them born in Sutton Mandeville, Wiltshire. One of their sons, Walter, emigrated to New England with his family in 1638. John died before 1621, because Alice, in her will, written on March 2, 1621, calls herself a widow, of Semley. Her will was proved in early 1624, so she probably died in late 1623 in Semley. In her will, she says she is to be buried in the churchyard at Semley, at the church of St. Leonard's.⁵
