George Aldrich

George Aldrich was born at Derbyshire, England, in about 1605. He is said to be the son of George Aldrich and Joan Thurgood. He married Katherine Seald September 3, 1629, in Derbyshire. She was born in about 1610. They came to America in November 1631 probably on the ship Lyon, first settling in Dorchester, Mass. On February 24, 1640, he was granted a 20-acre parcel of land in Mt. Wollaston, which became Braintree that same year. In 1663 they came to the region which was incorporated four years later as Mendon. George and his family were among the seven proprietor families of Mendon. The family may have moved to Swansea for a few years, returning to Mendon by 1680.

George Aldrich was a tailor. He died March 1, 1683 and his wife Katherine died January 11, 1691, both in Mendon.

A tablet in Founders' Park in Mendon lists George Aldrich among the proprietors.

George Aldrich of Derbyshire m. Katherine Seald Sep. 3 1629. On Nov 6, 1631 he came to America and first settled in Dorchester, Ma, then in Braintree, and in 1633 before the seventh month came to the territory which in 1667 was incorporated as a town and called Mendon. He, with six other men being the first pioneers of the town.Dec. 7, 1636 George Aldrich was made a Freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in Dorchester, MA. At that time church membership was a requisite for becoming a freeman. Only freemen could vote and hold office; so it was carefully arranged that only "orthodox" personss should have any part in the government. As it was, they emigrated to America for this reason and for many other factors. On Feb. 24 1640 Land was granted by the general Court of Massachusetts Colony to George Aldrich, John French, George Shepard, Thomas Thayer, Daniel Lovett and others. On June 9 1663 George Aldridge, tailor, and Katherine his wife sold to Richard Thayer for 30 pounds sterling one dwelling house at Montreol in Braintree 2 orchards, 8 acres bounded east and west on Richard Thayer north and Joseph Crosky South on Montreol River. After the sale he bought 240 acres of land, called Aldridges farm, situated near Great Pond on Braintree, which was sold later to a man called Deafie in 1677, the time at which George and his family moved back to Mendon after King Philip War ended. The tablet at Founder's Park in Mendon, in memory of the founders of Mendon, "The Old Mother Town", settled 1663, incorporated 1667, lists at the first three meeting houses, in 1668: Ferdinando Thayer, George Aldrich, Daniel Lovett, John Moore, John Woodland, John Harbor, Mathias Puffer, Joseph White, John Thompson, Walter Cook, Abraham Staples, John Gurney and John Rockwood. In 1680 it lists Samuel Hayward, William Holbrook, Angel Torrey, and in 1690 it lists Robert Taft, Benjamin Wheelock, Josiah Chapin, James Keith, Eleazer Daniels.
