Inscription:Capt. John Johnson, ESQ and his 2nd wife Margery Scudder Johnson are buried in Eliot Burying Ground, West Roxbury, Mass. This cemetery was established in 1630. The grave markers of Capt. John & his wife no longer exist. Note: I've been to this cemetery and his gravestone no longer exists there or is illegible. It is my feeling that Capt. John Johnson should be listed in the Eliot Buring Grounds in West Roxbury. His remains would still be there, and only the Plot is unknown, because you could not find an legible stone. I, too, could not find, with certainty, who his parents are. Ancestry.com gave me Rev. John Johnson 1550–1643. He was an Anglican priest of the Church of England and educated at St. John's College, Cambridge, and Hannah Throckmorton 1544–1588, the granddaughter of Sir Thomas Throckmorton and Elizabeth Berkeley.

John Johnson's exact birth place is not known, but since known relatives resided about 12 miles from London on the river Lee, he may have come from the same locale. He travelled from England with the Winthrop Fleet arriving in Salem, Massachusetts in June 1630. He came as a widower, with 5 children.. He lived there a few months, and soon moved to Roxbury, Massachsuetts, where he was named Constable in October 1630. He became a freeman there in May 1631, together with his son-in-law Roger Mowry. He was one of the first members of Rev. Eliot's church at Roxbury, and became very active in town affairs. He was a tavern keeper by trade.John was first elected Deputy to the General Court in 1634, and served in that office for 15 years. John was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, and served as clerk of the company for 3 years. He became Surveyor of all arms and ammunition of the Colony, and stored munitions in buildings near his tavern on Roxbury Street. On February 1, 1645-1646, there was a terrible fire. The tavern and all the outbuildings storing the gunpowder exploded, destroying also the first book of records of Roxbury and the school charter. John Winthrop recorded: "John Johnson, the surveyor general of the ammunition, a very industrious and faithful man in his place, having built a fair house in the midst of the town with divers barns and other outhouses, it fell on fire in the daytime, no man knowing by what occasion, and there being in it seventeen barrels of the country's powder, and many arms, all was suddenly burnt and blown up ... He being from home, the people came together to help and many were in the house, no man thinking of the powder till one of the company put them in mind of it, whereupon they all withdrew...soon after the powder took fire and blew up all about it, and shook the houses in Boston and Cambridge, so as men thought it had been an earthquake, and carried great pieces of timber a good way off, and some rags and such light things beyond Boston meeting house ..."John served as attorney for many colonists, witnessed many wills and deeds, and is well documented in the records of Roxbury. He was a confidant of the powerful men of the Colony, and a special friend and advisor to Assistant Governor Thomas Dudley, who left him 5 pounds in his will, and appointed him one of the executors of his estate. His own will was drawn up on the day of his death in 1659, and mentioned two grandchildren, "Elizabeth and Mehittable Johnson who have lived with me ..." as well as his 5 surviving children. The inventory of his estate taken after his death in 1659 revealed, "1 Bible, 1 Psalme booke & 8 bookes more" as well as carpets, silver spoons and other indications that he was a man of some education and substance.
