Note on Husband: Samuel + CHAPIN

In 1877 a bronze statue of "The Puritan" sculpted by Augustus St Gaudens was presented to the city of Springfield and placed beside the public library on State St. It is now in Springfield's Merrick Park. It was dedicated to the memory of Deacon Samuel Chapin of whom it is said it is an idealised portrait. It emphasises the piety and perhaps moral rigidity of the country's religious founders, evident in the scultoral pose with the proud stance, the sure stride, flowing cape, assertive use of cane and hefty Bible.

• Research. 1 Deacon Samuel Chapin came with his family to reside in Springfield in 1642. It would rather appear that he resided in this country considerable time, perhaps eight or ten years before he came to Springfield, and perhaps the greater part of his children were born in this country, but no record has been found of the birth of but one--the youngest, and we do not find any record of but one of his sons taking the freeman's oath. David, his son, was made a freeman in Springfield, 5th day, 12th month, 1649. He is supposed to be the progenitor of all who bear the name in this country, and I have not found one of the name who could trace their lineage to any other source. On 10 October 1652, Samuel Chapin was appointed one of the magistrates of Springfield and in 1654 his commission was extended indefinitely. He was also much employed in other public business--useful and highly esteemed man. In the records of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay in "New England" the name John Chapin is mentioned in connection with the building of a movable fort, 4 Mar 1633/4,and in July 1634. Mention is made of a meadow, a part of which "John Chapin hath mown".

Samuel moved from Paignton to Berry Pomeroy shortly after his first child David was born. They probably stayed there until they emigrated to America with their 6 children. With the issuance of a new prayer book by the High Church Scotland and the Pilgrims of England wanted to leave their homes and get away from High Church domination. Samuel and his family arrived in Roxbury Mass. in 1638. In 1641,they moved to Boston. Samuel took the freemans oath in Boston 22 Jun 1641. They then moved to Springfield,Mass. after the birth of their 9th child Japhet. Samuel and John Pynchon, the fur trader, knew each other in England and he led a group of Pilgrims, including the Chapin Family, to Springfield. Deacon Samuel was one of the founders of the 'Old First Parish Church' and he served as deacon. They lived in peace and carried on a mutual advantageous trade in corn, skins, and general produce for 40 years. Then King Philips war began and many settlers and indians were kille
