INTRODUCTION
With
the permission of his descendants, Fran Matkovich began the painstaking task of
translating Hans Tabars Geschichte von Zerne from German to English
early in 2003. Fran voluntarily undertook this project in order to create a
lasting family history for the benefit of her children, grandchildren, and all
Deutsch-Zerne researchers. We are grateful that her hard work has resulted in a
narrative of the village and its Donauschwaben settlers that can finally be
studied by anyone who does not read German. Digitized photographs from the book, pages 153-176, were contributed by Tim Tabar and are accessible through the Table of Contents. To further assist researchers, a Surname Index appears in the Addendum following the Table of Contents. The History of Zerne is lengthy, so please allow sufficient time for it to load before browsing. Thanks
to the assistance of John M. Michels, we are also pleased to display, in two
parts, a detailed map of Deutsch-Zerne prepared by Magdalena Steger née Getsch
in 1986. These maps are a helpful accompaniment to the "History of
Zerne"; links are also included in the Addendum: |
