FAMILY TREE - DIANE CUMMINGS
Letitia JENKINSON (b.1821-24, d.1901)

Letitia JENKINSON said she was born in 1824 at Fenigh, Carlow, Ireland
She died in 1901 aged 77 at the Bay View Hotel in Bridge Road, Richmond (Victoria, Australia)
Letitia indicated on her marriage certificate that her parents were William JENKINSON and Ann (nee MATHERS)
and that they lived at Fenigh, Carlow, Ireland.

We were unable to locate any information about this Irish lass until
I searched for Jenkinson Fenagh on www.google.com with one result
(which included an email address). This result indicated a James Keppel
had a 'Jenkinson' in his family from the same area.
His response to my emailed request for help :
Dear Di. Thanks for your email but I'm not sure if I can be of any help.
As far as I can find, there is only one connection between the Jenkinson family
and the Keppel family with a marriage between Mary Elleanor (sic) Jenkinson
(daughter of William, possibly of Ballaghadereen, near Bagnalstown) and my namesake James Keppel who were married in Fenagh Church of Ireland church in 1922.
He died in 1943 and she died in 1952 and are both buried in Fenagh.
They had no children. I have yet to connect this James firmly into my family tree although there is no doubt he would have been related.

The Jenkinsons who still live in the area are Church of Ireland. The Church of Ireland parish records for the parishes of Fenagh and Myshall are in the custody of the local clergyman. The Fenagh ones start from 1809. I hope to visit him sometime to double-check some dates in the Myshall registers. If I have time, (and he has time to "supervise" me, as strictly speaking, he is supposed to do!)
I will try to take down some Jenkinson details from Fenagh.
But don't hold your breath until this happens as I am a farmer and will be
babysitting over 250 sheep who are about to start lambing!
This will keep me busy for about 6 weeks.
By the way, I live near Tullow, Co. Carlow, about 10 miles from Fenagh.
Best wishes in your search. James Keppel Tue, 5 Mar 2002

He visited the local minister and passed on the following information to us.
The Fenagh Parish records confirm that Letitia was born on July 17, 1831
to William JENKINSON and Ann (nee Mathers) in Fenagh, County Carlow.
Their children: William (1825), Ellen (1828), Ann (1829),
Letitia (1831) and Mary Ann (1833).

By using a "wildcard" when searching online shipping indexes (into Victoria, Australia)
we found that Letitia Jenkinson arrived in Australia 1856 on the ship "Ocean Chief".
We understand that she may have come to Australia to help her cousin with the children.
Unfortunately we have nothing to indicate who this cousin may be.

Letitia married John HOLMES in 1858 (V.989)
He was born at Ballynarig, a hamlet near Limavady, Londonderry, Ireland in 1819
to James Holmes and Jane (nee Gilfillan).
His death certificate indicates he lived in Victoria for 48 years,
which indicates he probably arrived in Australia c.1852 (ship name not known as yet).

Their children include:
William James Gabriel Holmes, Jane Gilfillan Holmes, Letitia Ann Holmes,
Charles Thomas Holmes, Emily Jane Holmes, Alice Watson Holmes and George Samuel Holmes
