fenianraidservice

This is the application of Great-Grandpa John I. McLeod for his Fenian Raid "bounty" (believed to be $100.00) which I obtained from the National Archives. Accompanying documentation for the span of almost a year after the date of his application does not reveal whether he ever received his bounty.

I have transcribed the application and the accompanying "Comrade's Declaration" exactly as made, grammatical and typographical errors included.

FENIAN RAID SERVICE

The Fenian Raid Volunteer Bounty Act

Application for Grant

I, John McLeod of Amherst, in the Count of Cumberland in the Province of Nova Scotia do hereby apply for a grant under the provisions of the Fenian Raid Volunteer Bounty Act.

The grounds of my application are as follows:--

I enrolled in the Militia Regiment of Kings County, in the Province of New Brunswick and served with it at Fox Hill, in the said County of Kings and Province of New Brunswick, under the command of Captain D.M. Campbell, and in April A.D. 1866 I was ordered out on active service, arms and ammunition being supplied for to enable us to perform our said service.

We marched from Campbell Settlement to Norton and took the train there for Hampton, in Kings County, where we met the rest of the Company. When at Hampton word came that we were not needed, and having been marched in Company from the Station to Hampton Village we were dismissed by Colonel Saunders.

I have not made any previous application for a grant under the said Bounty Act.

I, John McLeod, of the County of Cumberland, in the Province of Nova Scotia, do solemnly declare, that I am the person mentioned the foregoing application for Volunteer Bounty.

That all the statements made by me in said application are true.

That I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true, and knowing that it is of the same force and effect, as if made under oath and by virtue of the Canada Evidence Act.

Declared before me at the Town of Amherst in the Province of Nova Scotia, this 30th day of December, A.D. 1913.
