Please note that the chain of dates in these documents is slightly confusing
although,
in essence, it appears that great, great Grandpa
Hector McLeod owed a gentleman named Henry Hallett the sum of $83.00 and when he
couldn't repay the loan, he "quit claimed" 100 acres to Mr. Hallett in 1869, in
repayment. Then, from all appearances, Hector's son, John Irvine
McLeod, bought the land back from Mr. Hallett in 1873, after Hector's death,
for $100.00 (nice profit for that scallywag, Hallett!) in order that Hector's widow (John's
stepmother, Margaret (McKenzie) McLeod)
could remain on the property. What follows are the documents pertaining to
these transactions.
The Petition of Henry Hallett of the Parish of Hampton in the County of Kings
HUMBLY SHEWETH-
That he has procured for the sum of Eighty-three dollars from Hector McLeod a Deed of Quit Claim to a Lot of Land in the County of
Kings situate as follows:In the Parish of Sussex in the County of Kings County known as Lot number six - fourth tier Fairweathers Survey, south side of the Kennebecasis River.
That Petitioner, at the time when the Land herein described was applied for or
purchased by Hector McLeod was not directly or indirectly connected with the said
application or purchase, but
has been induced to contract with the said Hector McLeod
for his interest in the Land for the following
reasons:-
That the said Hector McLeod was indebted to the said Henry Hallett
and for the purpose of securing the said debt.
And he therefore humbly prays your Excellency to approve
the Deed herewith submitted, and to direct that the said Land be granted to
him. And as in
duty bound will ever pray.

Know all men by these presents that I, Henry Hallett of the parish of Hampton, in Kings County in the Province of New Brunswick, Gentleman, for and in consideration of the sum of One Hundred Dollars of lawful money of the said province to me in hand, paid by John Irvine McLeod of the parish of Sussex in the county aforesaid, Farmer, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged do grant, bargain, sell, remise, release and forever quit claim unto the said John Irvine McLeod, his heirs and assigns all my right, title, interest, claim and demand whatsoever of, in, to or out of the following described piece or parcel of land lately in the seizure or possession of Hector McLeod and by him assigned to me (the same having been located by the Crown law office to the said Hector McLeod but no grant thereof having yet issued) the said lot being situate in the parish of Sussex aforesaid and known as Lot number Six (No. 6) bounded on the North by land granted to Patrick Curran, on the East by land granted to John B. Campbell, on the South by land owned by David K. Campbell and on the West by land granted to William Joliff, the lot hereby conveyed and assigned containing one hundred acres. To have and to hold the said lot of land and premises with the rights, privileges and appurtenances thereunder belonging unto the said John Irvine McLeod, his heirs and assigns to his and their use forever so that neither I, the said Henry Hallett nor my heirs nor any person or persons claiming under me or them shall at any time hereafter by any ways or means have claim to or demand any right or title to the aforesaid lot of said land and premises or to any part or parcel thereof forever. In witness whereof, I the said Henry Hallett, have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty-third day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-three.
