Descendants of Peter Coldren (1804-1886) 1. PETER1 COLDREN was born on 26 Jan 1804 at Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Lutz on 12 Aug 1828. He died on 24 Aug 1886 at age 82. He was buried at Converse Cemetery, Richland Township, Grant County, Indiana. He appeared on the census of 1830 at Hanover Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He appeared on the census of 1840 at Jay County, Indiana. He and Elizabeth Lutz appeared on the census of 1850 at Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana. Peter and Elizabeth lived in Pennsylvania for some years then moved to Ohio for a short time before arriving in Jay County, Indiana in 1840. They moved to Grant County, Indiana, in 1864. The entry titled "The Coldren Family" in Jay County, Indiana, 1982 states "It is believed that Peter's father and uncle emigrated to America from Scotland. 2. WILLIAM ROSS2 COLDREN (Peter1) was born on 17 May 1829 at Pennsylvania. He married (1) Nancy Wiley, daughter of Thomas Wiley and Eleanor Smith, on 19 May 1850 at Randolph County, Indiana. He married (2) Rebecca J. [married name Harper] on 20 Dec 1877 at Miami County, Indiana. He died on 28 Jun 1897 at age 68. The 1850 US census lists William Coldren's occupation as a cabinet maker. On July 14, 1851, W. R. Coldren was appointed Postmaster when the Bear Creek post office was moved to West Liberty, Jackson Township, Jay County, Indiana from its original location in Bloomfield. The following July, the post office was returned to Bloomfield and a new Postmaster was appointed. Beginning with the 1860 U.S. Census, his occupation was a school teacher. He and Nancy Wiley appeared on the census of 1860 at Waltz Township, Wabash County, Indiana. William R. Coldren was a Captain in the 118th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry. The regiment was organized at Indianapolis and Camp Wabash, Indiana, from July 28 to September 5, 1863, to serve six months. It was mustered out at different dates from the 1st to 4th of March, 1864, by reason of expiration of term of service. Coldren's service began on September 2, 1863. William Ross Coldren appeared on the census of 1870 at Jackson County, Kansas. In the summer of 1871, William Coldren taught a four month term at Pleasant Valley school district (No. 16) . "Mr. Coldren, when he taught, would elucidate in matters of natural history, which was also very interesting to young minds. " William Coldren was also listed among the first teachers at Points school (District No. 2). Nancy Wiley died on 12 Jan 1876. In 1886, William R. Coldren, M.D., was a professor of botany and materia medica at the Curtis Physio-Medical Institute in Marion, Grant County, Indiana. He also lectured in other subjects and was secretary of the Institute. The Institute was established December 9, 1881 under an act of the Indiana legislature, approved February 2, 1855, and by 1886 was in its sixth year. The regular course of lectures began in October and ended in March. A student was required to complete the full course before being eligible to graduate. The requirements further provided that "the student must have a good knowledge of the English branches and a good moral character." The cost to the student, in fees, was "professors' ticket, $50; matriculation, $5; demonstrator's fee, $5; graduation, $25." "Alexander Davis, with his wife, Melinda, and children, Sarah Lovina (Mrs. Mat Knox, Julia (Mrs. Oscar Coledren), John, Ellen (Mrs. O. W. Grover), Dora (Mrs. John Pogue), and James, came from Black Hawk county, Iowa, in 1857, and settled on the farm now occupied by his son, John. During the hard-times year of 1860 he drove back to Indiana with his family, where he had lived before he went to Iowa. He stayed there two years, when he returned to his Kansas home. Mr. Davis died about 1866. His widow went to Oregon with her son, James, several years ago, where she died. She was Mrs. Vance when she left here." The following item appeared in The Havensville Torchlight, 5 April 1894: Mrs. Julia Coldren arrived from San Francisco Saturday to resume her residence in this community among her relatives and many friends. The following is the obituary of James Austin Coldren as reprinted in the Havensville [Kansas] Review on 11 May 1911 from the Tri-Weekly Republican, Corvallis, Oregon: "James A. Coldren, night watchman at the Occidental lumber mill, died at his home on North Second street this morning at 2:30. Two weeks ago he suffered a hemorrhage of the brain, supposed to have been caused by a fall while working at the mill. He had partially recovered from this and was anxious to return to work. Last night he went to the mill to report for duty but was persuaded to return home. During the night he suffered another apoplectic stroke and continued to sink rapidly to the end, which came at 2:30 this morning." "The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Bovee undertaking parlors and the burial at Crystal Lake cemetery. Rev. H. H. Hubbell will conduct the services." "James Austin Coldren was born at Union, Ind., Feb. 9, 1853. He joined the Christian church when ten years of age and was a faithful member all his life. He began teaching school when 14 years of age and followed the profession for many years. Aug. 13, 1972(incorrect 1872), he was married to Miss Julia Davis, Pottawatomie county, Kansas. In 1888 they removed to Oregon and in 1890 to California. In 1905 they returned to Oregon and Mr. Coldren continued his school work teaching at Philomath, Summit and other points in Benon and Lincoln counties. A year ago the family came to Corvallis and Mr Coldren entered the employ of the Occidental Lumber Co. as night watchman. His employers held him in high esteem as a faithful workman and a man of sterling Christian character." "His wife and daughter, Oneita survive him." The Ancestral File is the only source the author has seen that gives a middle name (assuming that the "Harrison Coldren" with no first initial is, in fact, William H. Coldren). Most sources list his name as "W. H. Coldren" or "William H. Coldren." However, the name is consistent with the fact that Ida (Spoor) Hammond, grandmother of the author, gave her grandfather's name as "Harry Coldren." He appeared on the census of 1860 at Waltz Township, Wabash County, Indiana. The 1880 US census, California Township, Starke County, Indiana gives W. H. Coldren's occupation as laborer and his wife, Ida M., as keeping house. He appeared on the census of 1880. He lived on 5 Jan 1894 at Clifton Avenue, Logansport, Cass County, Indiana. In a 1977 letter to her grandson, David Staub, Ida (Spoor) Hammond said that her grandfather Coldren was buried in Crown Hill East Cemetery in Knox, Starke County, Indiana in a Thompson family plot given to him by his cousin before he moved to California. This is not consistent with a 1939 letter from Coldren's daughter, Della Leota (Coldren) Spoor, to her niece, Elizabeth McGraw, in which she said that she visited her father's grave in Logansport. Leota Coldren, writing to Nellie's daughter Elizabeth in 1939 said: He was a tall athletic fellow and I did not know him so well although they visited us once when Russell was little and they were on their way back to Hammond from Pittsburgh where he had been working. And for no reason in the world that any one knows he went out to work one day and we have never seen nor heard of him since. Nellie never knew whether he was killed or what became of him. That was a short time before your birth. So for the second time she was alone with a new baby. Not alone for I think our mother suffered as much as Nellie did & did all she could for her. My own opinion is that his people coaxed him away. I understood they were well-to-do Chicago people- He was a structural steelworker.
