Notes for JAMES EDWARD MARKHAM: Notes by Carolyn Markham Lowe December 1999 To most people he was know as Ed, to his grandchildren he was known as Big Dad. I remember as a child Big Dad letting us climb on him while he was in his chair and combing his thick head of gray hair. ********************************* Notes from Charles Markham December 1999 He farmed briefly land owned by his father James Monroe before moving to Haskell, Texas, where he also farmed. His Uncle T.A. Upshaw's son was a banker in Stamford and influenced Ed & Ora to settle nearby in Haskell. In 1919 he moved to Happy, Swisher Co., Texas where he also farmed. In the 1930's he opened a farm equipment dealership which sold Minneapolis-Moline farm equipment. He owned this business until his death from a heart attack at the age of 76. Ed was a big man and could tell a very good tale. He had a jolly disposition and had many friends who enjoyed his company. *********************************** FUNERAL AND OBITUARY NOTES FROM THE AMARILLO DAILY NEWS, MAY 2, 1958 James Edward Markham Canyon, May 1 (Special)-James Edward Markham, 75, retired farmer from Happy, died Wednesday afternoon at Neblett Hosp- ital in Canyon where he had been brought earlier in the day after suffering a heart attack. LOIS ELOISE5 MARKHAM (JAMES EDWARD4, JAMES MONROE3, JOHN BUNYON2, JOHN1) was born August 08, 1904 in Haskell, Haskell Co., Texas, and died November 1975 in Reno, Washoe Co., Nevada. She married (1) WILLIAM HAVLICK 1951 in Reno, Washoe Co., Nevada. He was born 1886 in Chicago, Illinois, and died Unknown. She married (2) ORMAND HALIFAX THOMAS Unknown in Reno, Washoe Co., Nevada. He died Unknown. She married (3) BOB EDGRIN Unknown. He was born Unknown. Notes for LOIS ELOISE MARKHAM: Notes from Elaine Markham Keller 1999 My sister and I always called her our Auntie because she was so close to Dad's age. She was married in Texas...I think her husband's name was Ormand Halifax Thomas. She had a son named Garland who died in infancy. One time she told me it was twins but she always like to embroider her stories a bit in the time honored Texas way. In the 1930's she came West, I think to Reno for a divorce. She was married to a Swede named Edgrin when I was little and never had any other children. She lived in Burlingame, California before the war and learned fine millinery (that's for ladies) and worked in an exclusive shop with her friend Dorothy who was a furrier. Durning WWII she went to work in the shipyards at San Francisco bay area, just like Rosie the riveter. We saw her often during those years because we were moving around a lot then too. After the war she was in Reno again for another divorce and stayed there for the rest of her life. She learned to make custom draperies and other decor and was running a workshop of her own with 1 or 2 employees for many years and did fantastic hand work. Eloise was a heavy smoker who also had asthma which later became emphysema and later cancer which was terminal. In 195l or 52 she married William Halvik who was then 65 years of age and had never been married. It was a good marriage and Bill was wonderful in caring for her in her last illness. I'm not sure of her death date even though I went to her service. It was approximately 1970. He married JEAN EVELYN LAROE August 08, 1946 in Amarillo, Potter Co., Texas, daughter of HOMER LAROE and ETHEL DUFF. She was born August 03, 1928 in Happy, Swisher Co., Texas. Notes for HAROLD COCHRAN MARKHAM: Notes by Carolyn Markham Lowe Looking at Dad's birth Certificate is seems that he was never named, even the supplemental report for adding a given name is not filled in. From Dad's Army Discharge papers it show the date of enlistment as May 9, 1942, date of entry into active Service as May 9, 1942, entered into the service in Lubbock, Texas. He was discharged July 6, 1945 from the separation center at Ft. Bliss, Texas. He received the Combat Infantrymans Badge May 25, 1944. Dad was in 7 major campaigns; Southern France, Tunisia, Rhineland, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Algerian-French Morocco and Rome-Arno. Decorations and Citations received; Good Conduct Medal. European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon (7 Bronze Stars). His discharge shows no wounds but Dad's feet were frozen during one of his campaigns and cause problems and pain the rest of his life. There was and Award of Disability Compensation or Pension (service connected) for "War Service Nervous Condition". Dad did collect for awhile but that was for only a little while. I remember as a child that we moved around a lot and as I look back I feel that Dad was searching for something, I am not sure that he ever found what he was looking for. We moved from Texas in 1959 or 1960 to Grants, New Mexico and were there for only the summer. We moved to Cathederal City, California out side of Palm Springs where Dad worked for Uncle Bud, Ernest William Markham. We were there for about 1 year then moved to Hemet, California where Dad worked in mobile home factories and as a parts man with a car dealer. While we were in California Dad was known as "Mark" and that is what my husband Bob knew him as. On our first trip back to Texas everyone was asking me how Harold was and later that night Bob ask me who Harold was. To all of his grandchildren he was known as Grandpa Mark and boy did he ever spoil the little ones. ************************************* More About HAROLD COCHRAN MARKHAM: Burial: Coolidge Cemetery, Coolidge, Arizona Cause of Death: A) Respiratory Failure B) Left Upper Lobe Pneumonia Medical Information: 1965 - Stroke1977 - Alcoholic Hepatic Cirrhosis1985 - Gleeding Esophagial varices Residence: Bet. 1970 - 1987, Coolidge, Pinal Co. This really did not do any good and just made her miserable in the California heat that summer. Pam had a congenital heart problem complicated by rheumatic fever in childhood. This heart condition was not discovered until 1970 or 1971. At this time Pam had open heart surgery to replace the mitro valve and repair on other valve. Pam was able to live 15 years after the surgery and continued to do what she wanted, leading a productive life. She owned and operated a bookkeeping service in Coolidge, Arizona, as well as owned a beauty shop. Pam helped her 2nd husband, Johnny Skiles, in his cotton rood business. As children we did tease Pam a lot as to exactly why I am not sure, but she always took the teasing in good stride. Pam had an olive complexion and that was different from the rest of us and we would tell her that she wasn't born but hatched. As usual she would get back at us in her own time.     15. iv. He was wounded in Vim Kim, Dinh Tuong Province, South Viet Nam on January 4, 1969. As a result of his tour he receive two (2) Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star with a "V" device for Valor, and the Army Commendation Medal.   THE FOLLOWING WAS WRITTEN BY BOB SHORTLY AFTER HE WAS WOUNDED 3 Jan 69 Outside of Vim Kim, South Viet Nam We, the 2nd Platoon, left Vim Kim to go on an ambush patrol. We left at 3:30 PM and started east to our night location. As we approached this location we split up into tow patrols. The Lt. (Lt. John St.Clair) figured we would have a better chance to get something it we split. so that night we had double coverage in our area. Our patrol set up on a dike, and was ready for anything. The other patrol was set up in the wood line, around a few small huts, hoping for some action. Well that night was quiet and both patrols saw no action. The two patrols were to meet the next morning, so we planned our meeting point, and then called our other patrol over the radio and got the time and place mapped out. Then we set up our guard, and tried to get some sleep. The Lt. had first guard, I had second guard. After my guard was over I woke up the next man and after he was ready and awake, I settled down to a hopeful peaceful night sleep. When I thought I was asleep, I woke up with a strange noise in my ear. I never found out what it was, so tried to go back to sleep. The next thing I knew, it was morning and the Lt. was waking me up. Well, we broke camp, and started out for our meeting point, with our other patrol. The second patrol reached the area before we did, so set up a guard around the hut and waited or us to arrive. Well we arrived and set up our guard and started to plan out our day and how to setup our patrols for that night. 4 Jan 69 After the Lt., Sgt., and a few other men had finished planning the day and had our two ambush patrols set up we got full report ready to call in to the Commanding Officer. We told our "CO" our plans and he agreed to let us complete our mission we had planned. The rest of that morning and early afternoon we rested and waited for the right times to make our move. When that time came everybody knew what to do. The magic hour came and we all got our equipment ready, checked our maps and then sent our good byes to the other patrol. We started out of the wood line, along a very muddy dike, and after we had moved about 500 meters, we got a call from the other patrol, saying they had spotted 2 VC and were chasing them in our direction. We started to run toward them to cut them off and box them in. The dike we were on came to a small stream, and we had to stop to find a way to cross. We moved around and just at that time a "Chinese Claymore" went off and hit the Sgt. and one other man (Bob found out later that this man was SP4 David McCullough). Everybody hit the dirt and started to fire on the wood line. I took off my radio and started toward the Sgt., who was wounded in the head and hand. I moved quickly, but carefully to work on him to patch him up. As I was treating him for shock and putting his feet on his pack another "Chinese Claymore" went off about two feet to my right. I was blown up and fell into the rice paddy where I laid until I was taken out by a helicopter to the hospital. I was really shot, and my leg was ripped open and blood was gushing out. I was in the paddy for about 20 minutes and then was taken to the hospital. For my heroic act in saving the Sgt. I was put in for the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Metal. For my leg I was given another Purple Heart also for this action I was given a free trip home, to the United States. Statement November 29, 1999 by Bob As a result of this conflict there were 3 wounded and 3 killed. Bob never found out the names of the 3 soldiers who were killed. Lt. St.Clair was later (about 3 weeks) wounded and in the same hospital in South Viet Nam, the second hospital Bob had been sent to. Lt. St.Clair was wounded by a 50 caliber machine gun, that wounded his lower leg. Lt. St.Clair told Bob that the flak jacket that he wore, Bob had worn, and another soldier had worn was burned as that was too many wounded wearing the same jacket.   More About ROBERT FRANKLIN LOWE: Attended: Bet. 1965 - 1967, Arizona Bible College, Phoenix, Maricopa Co., Arizona Graduation: June 1965, Hemet Union High School, Hemet, Riverside Co., California Marriage Notes for CAROLYN MARKHAM and ROBERT LOWE: Bob and Carolyn were married at the First Baptist Church in Hemet, California by Rev.
