My Markham Family

James Monroe Markham, Enzi Ross, Earnest W (Bud) Markham, Nannie Belle Markham
Mattie Bell Markham, Walter Markham, Mable Markham

This picture was taken about 1910. Bud Markham was very young, Mattie Bell died in 1913 from spinal meningitis, and Walter and Mable had just gotten married.

John Bunyon Markham, born 1819, Tennessee, was the son of John Markham Sr, born about 1788, Virginia, died about 1858, Louisiana.

John Markham Sr was possibly the son of Lewis Markham and his first wife Elizabeth Sprigg. They got married 28 Nov 1787 in Harrison County, Virginia, which is now West Virginia. Lewis Markham served in the American Revolution as an Orderly Sergeant and Sergeant Major. He enlisted in October 1780 in Virginia. His pension issued 13 Dec 1833 was $60 per annum.

Lewis Markham was the son of John Markham and Alice Miller. John was born 1732, Farquier County, Virginia, died 1804, Stafford County, Virginia. Alice was born 1739, died 1784. They got married about 1761.

John Markham was the son of William Markham and Elizabeth Mauzy. William was born 1698, died 1734, Westmoreland County, Virginia. Elizabeth was born 1714, died 1784.

William Markham was the son of Lewis Markham and Elizabeth Newton. Lewis was born 1659, Westmoreland County, Virginia, died 1713, Westmoreland County, Virginia.

I have a DNA connection with descendants of Elizabeth Markham Marshall, the daughter of John Markham (brother of Lewis and William Markham). I am just not sure exactly how. Our Markham family could come from Lewis, John, or William Markham.

Lewis, John and William Markham were the sons of Lewis Markham Sr, born 1636, Glamorgan, Wales. Lewis was an indentured servant for 4 years in Barbados before he settled in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

According to Family Finder DNA on Family Tree DNA, I am related to Elizabeth Markham, born 1614, England, who was the daughter of Vallentine Markham, born 1583-1584. Vallentine had two sons who lived to adulthood, Robert Markham, born 1616, and Thomas Markham, born 1620. Thomas was apparently named for an earlier son that died at 3 years of age. I believe that Lewis Markham, born 1636, was the son of either Robert or Thomas Markham.

The parents of Vallentine Markham were Richard Markham and his wife Dorothy Wood, who married 21 Feb 1573, Cornhill, London, England.

John Markham, born 1788 in Virginia, was living in White County, Tennessee in 1820 and Marion County, Alabama in 1830. I believe he had a son named John Bunyon Markham who married Sarah Elizabeth Upshaw 3 September 1843 in Noxubee County, Mississippi. They were in Bienville Parish, Louisiana by 1849. John is listed on one record as a junior, so was probably the son of John Markham who was in Marion County Alabama in 1830 and in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana in 1859.

1830 Census, Marion County, Alabama

Abner Markham 1 m 30-40; 1 f 40-50
              1 m 5-10; 2 f 5-10
                           2 f under 5

John Markham  1 m 40-50;
                           1 f 30-40
              1 m 15-20; 1 f 15-20
              1 m 5-10; 1 f 5-10
              1 m under 5; 1 f under 5

Lewis Markham 1 m 20-30; 1 f 15-20
              2 m under 5; 2 f 5-10

If this is my Markham family, then John Bunyon Markham was probably the little boy between 5 to 10 years of age above. Lewis Markham may have been a younger brother or possibly the oldest son of John Markham Sr. Abner was probably a brother of John.

The other Markhams were not found in Noxubee County in 1840, although they must have been nearby.

For some reason, John Bunyon Markham was at the home of D. J. Morris in Minden, Louisiana. Morris stabbed him in the side and the chest and he died, in February 1856, and was buried in Minden. The judge listened to Morris and then let him go without charges. Sarah was left with five small children, Permelia Ann, Emily Jane, Tabitha, Elizabeth, born 1851, James Monroe, born 1853, and John Bunyon, born 1855. Here is the settlement of his estate.

It is believed that John had brothers named James C Markham, Thomas Markham, Nimrod Markham, Carroll Markham, and Francis Marion Markham A descendant of Nimrod Markham and I have matched on a DNA Y-chromosone test. Plus we know that he had at least one brother, James C. Markham, born in Tennessee in 1807.

Sarah Elizabeth Upshaw was the daughter of John Upshaw and his wife Tabitha Lawless. She was born in Elbert County, Georgia in 1825, although most census records show her as born in Alabama. Her sister Mary married Lorenzo D. Thomas in Noxubee County, Mississippi in 1847. Sarah's sister Emily J. Upshaw married Albert Warr 26 Oct 1848 in Noxubee County. John Upshaw is the son of Forrester Upshaw and wife Ann Faulkner, and grandson of Leroy Upshaw, who fought in the American Revolution from Amherst County, Virginia, later moved to Elbert County, Georgia, and wife Elizabeth Bradley.

This James C. Markham was living in San Augustine County, Texas in 1880. He is 72 years old, with a young wife, Mary A, born in 1828, and a step-son Eli Poindexter, born in 1863. James was born in Tennessee, his father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in North Carolina. Where are his sons, James, born 1839, John, born 1841, and Nimrod, born 1843? Nimrod was apparently living in San Augustine County in 1880 also, aged 36, with children. The original census is very faint.

This is the only census I can find family on. The 1860 Census of Bienville Parish, Louisiana was apparently lost. The Abell Warr above was Albert Warr, the brother-in-law of Sarah E. Upshaw Markham and the husband of Emily Upshaw Warr. It is a poor census taker that won't write down the ages of a family.

Permelia died about 1886, and her husband married in 1887 and had many children. One possible son of Permelia was Lee Barrington, born about 1878. Donnie Shackleford has posted more about Lee.

* Goonight is actually Goodnight. The family of J. W. Goodnight is here because two of his daughters married two sons of James Monroe Markham. His full name was John Wesley Goodnight and his wife was Amanda Florence Vernon. He died in 1941 and his wife died 22 March 1960.

J. A. (J. H.) Warr was the nephew of Sarah E. Upshaw Markham, the son of her sister Emily. J.M. Markham and J.B. Markham are buried at Post Oak Cemetery, Bell County, Texas. Mollie married Norman E. Woodruff. Their son Spencer died 21 April 1956.

J.B. Markham and Fannie had a daughter, Sarah Louise, (listed above as Lou) and she was the grandmother of Grant Teaff, the football coach at Baylor University for over 20 years who is now in the College Football Hall of Fame. He is also the Executive Director of the American Football Coaches Association. Here is an article about him from the Baptist Standard

Mable was Mable Goodnight, she died at a very young age, and Walter was left a widower. Here is the World War 1 draft registration of William Walter Markham.

Sarah Elizabeth Upshaw Schultz was a friend I met in 1976, when I first started my Markham-Upshaw research. She was well on her way to being in the NSDAR from her descent from Leroy Upshaw of Amherst County, Virginia. She is descended from the Allen Upshaw on the 1850 Census of Bienville Parish, Louisiana, age 19, (full name Thomas Allen Upshaw) down through John J. Upshaw and then Thomas Allen Upshaw.
