Bob
I have one correction and 2 additions to your drug stores:
Coplands Drugs should be Coplans Drugs 13th and Maple Ave.
Owls Cut Rate Drugs 1242 Lafayette Avenue
West Drugs SW corner Lafayette and Maple Avenue
I have a couple more that I am checking out correct name to add.
Thanks Bob, you are doing a very good job--keep it up.
Joe

Hello Guys,

At long last I have a group I can reminisce with and not be considered an "old poop" for doing so.  The places listed in the business groups alone bring back many memories to me.  I thought I might add some to them, if you wouldn't mind:

Terre Haute Businesses--large and small

Beldon Plumbing Supplies--South Third Street
Lyceum Movie Theater--downtown (help me out on the address)
Bridges Grocery Store and Soda Fountain--First Street and Preston
Fagg's Grocery Store--Turner and Dillman (cold pop from the ice cooler; good pickle loaf)
Nora Heck's (Smith's) Grocery Store--South First Street and Turner
Deckard's DX Station (Sharon and Alva Deckard's father owned it)--where Apple House is now
Herschel Fields Marathon Station--South Third and Grant Street
Rotroff's Variety Store--South Third Street by Glass Company (model airplane supplies galore)
Kriescher's Coal Company--South Third Street and Voorhees
Red Bird Gas Station--South Third Street (where Jerry Wilkey's house used to be; Applebee's now)
Wells' Grocery Store--South Third Street and Voorhees (now a vacuum cleaner store)
Killion's Sundries--across from Rotroff's on South Third Street (good milkshakes and Bud's BBQ)
Henderson's Music Store--Wabash Avenue
Brewer's Music Store--505 Wabash (I have sheet music with their stamped address on it)
The Olympian Restaurant--around 5th Street and Wabash Avenue
"Old Mr. Mitten's Store" (that's all we ever called it)--First Street and Voorhees by Greenwood School
Gene's Market--First Street and Voorhees
The White Spot--South Seventh and Voorhees (great frozen custard and root beer in mugs)
Dog 'n Suds drive-in--South Third and Helen Avenue (CJ Maloof's father owned it); now Dunkin'  Donuts
A&W Root Beer Stand--South Third and Wheeler Avenue (short-lived)
"Tony's Store" (That's all we ever called it)--Arleth and Voorhees; Tony was an elderly Italian man
Campbell's Soup Factory--South Third Street north of Voorhees
Blower's Drugstore--the address was South Third Street and Osborne
Tanoos Market--South Third Street and Willow
Ury's Drugstore--South Third Street and Washington
Packard Auto Agency--across from Wiley on the south side of Poplar; now Kleptz's car museum
Tune Brother's Department Store--around Fifth and Wabash
Frank Rippey's Barber Shop--Harding Avenue and Hulman Streets (across from a seat cover shop)
Cliff Downey's Barbershop--Fourth and Walnut; he was across the alley from Sayres Bike Shop
Sayres Bicycle Shop--Fourth and Ohio
Bob Mc-Someone's Barbershop--next to Killion's Sundries on South Third Street; my barber
Seabury Market--South Seventh and Seabury Ave.
Wey Monument Company--South Third and College (?); scariest place in TH to catch a bus
The Golden Pheasant Dinner Club--South Thirteenth and Lockport Road
The Apple Club--South First Street and Davis Avenue; next to Paul Cox Airport
Johnny Hays' Ford Corner--133 South Sixth Street; I still hear the commercial in my ears

Well, guys, that's all I came up with in an hour or so, but I hope it helps.  I didn't even think of going into the fact that at one time we were reported to have more churches and taverns than any other city of our size.  We also had a plethora of small schools, if you remember.  I hope I didn't clutter things up by not dividing this information into proper groups, but at least the information is there.  BTW, I just talked to a friend, Dick Cline, who lives in Terre Haute.  He married a girl from Garfield (1958), Marilyn Ann Williams.  He sounded excited about this as well.  Maybe we can get them involved and make the web even better.  Marilyn would know a lot about the Twelve Points Area.

Take care,

Jerry (Everly)

Hey Bob Carmichael,

I have a friend in Terre Haute named Dick Cline.  His wife, the former Marilyn Williams (Garfield-'58--I think) had some information to add to our group.  But first, Dick's thoughts that he asked me to give to you:

"Mother never wanted me to go to the movies at the
American (State) but that is where the westerns were, so what she didn't know
didn't hurt me.
"The only thing I can remember, I think the Lyceum Theatre was out at 13th
and Wabash on the South side.  If it wasn't what was the one there?  It was
next to Frank's drive-in?
"The meat packing explosion I remember very well. (sorta).  I had two cousins
in it.  One was blown out through a wall.  They were not injured too bad.
Just minor.  Tell Bob Carmichael that I worked at Borden's after graduation
and his dad probably knew a lot of the drivers that I knew.  I had an uncle
and a cousin that worked at Borden's also."

Now Marilyn's addition to your businesses of Terre Haute.  She was well-acquainted with the north side:

"Another little neighborhood grocery store was Utenick's at the corner of North 25th & Buckeye.  His [the owner's] daughter was my first and longest-lasting friend.
Her name is Rosalie and she lives in Montezuma, IN.  She also graduated from
Garfield but I don't know if she has a computer or not.  I have found that so
many people I know and would like to write to do not have a computer.  We
will keep thinking about things that were around, but with the sheltered life
I led, I don't think I will be of much help but I will try."

I am working at getting Marilyn and Dick into the Forum, but I haven't heard from them in about two weeks.  I thought you would like the information and the bit about Borden's.

Jerry (W-59)
