The Queen/MacQueen Family

The name MacQUEEN or MacSWEYNE is said to originate from several sources; from the Gaelic Suibhne, meaning "going well", or MacCUINN, "son of Conn", or from the Norse, Sweyn. The MacQUEENS were of Hebridean and West Higland origin, and appear to have been originally associated with Clan Donald. MacQueen and McQueen are the same name, as "mac" is the Gaelic term for "son of" and abbreviations such as M' and Mc are simply shortened forms. After "the forty-five" the English tried to end the Highland clan system, and outlawed the use of Mac and tartans, although many just resurfaced later, when the troubles were past. Many Scot names were originally Mac-something, but were altered. In order to claim an American land grant many Scots had to bow to the Enlish' requirement of Anglicizing their names. Hence many a MacQueen became just a Queen.

It is supposed that John McQUEEN, of Inverness, Scotland is the patriarch of this family, but no records exist to prove this to be true. It is believed that Timothy MacQUEEN, was the son of John. But again, unproved. I will start with the known ancestor Timothy and work forward.
