Note 5: "…the R1b1c Haplogroup, characterized by being positive for M269 and negative for all other previously known SNPs in the R1b tree, has       <==== SEE NOTES  re FTDNA's DeepSNP R1b1c U series tests      <==== SEE NOTES  re FTDNA's DeepSNP R1b1c U series tests
recently been graced by a new set of markers that have been published upon and known as the U series of markers as discovered by   Drs. Dennis
Garvey and Jack Balantine.  These 4 new markers (including U106; U198; P107; & U152) bring 2 new major subgroups to the panel and
if the initial findings continue to hold, we expect that 40% of people who are M269+ will fall into one of these 2 sub-groups, for now
known as R1b1c9 and R1b1c10."  per a 6 March 2008 message from FTDNA.   One is  intrigued by the latest message from FTDNA soliciting
participation in the further testing for SNPs for subclades "for now known as R1b1c9 and R1b1c10", which includes this statement "the R1b1c Haplogroup...,
characterized by being positive for M269 and negative for all other previously known SNPs in the R1b tree".   The logic appears to be that R1b1c may have started
as  ht35, and subsequently mutated into ht15, with all the downstream SNPs being associated with ht15.   This probably makes some sense... however,
it remains to be seen whether any of the downstream SNPs might have occured prior to the mutation from ht35 to ht15.

Note 6:  Per a 6 March 2008 message from Vince Vizachero:  "Over the past few months, a lot of progress has been made in the ability to predict ht15/ht35        <==== SEE NOTES  re testing of DYF385 & DYF411 for ht35     <==== SEE NOTES  re testing of DYF385 & DYF411 for ht35
.... As you know, the modal value for DYS393 in ht35 is 12.  Unfortunately, many ht35 haplotypes have DYS393=13 and many ht15 haplotypes have DYS393=12 -
mostly by virtue of their sheer numbers.   DYS461=11 has always been a useful partner test, but it has never been clear how we should evaluate
a conflict between DYS393 and DYS461.  It turns out that there is a third marker, DYF385, that is particularly diagnostic
for ht35. This is not the same as DYS385, but rather a palindromic marker offered by FTDNA in its Advanced Orders. It appears that the modal value for ht15 is
DYF385=10,11 but that the modal value for ht35 is DYF385=10,10.  In fact, so far 100% of the suspected ht35 haplotypes I've tested have DYF385=10,11.
It does not appear that many members of the Border Reivers have tested either DYS461 or DYF385.  Such testing on even a small group of your members might answer
the ht15/ht35 question rather definitively… If you have members that are willing to order those two markers, I invite them to join the ht35 project so that we can
establish the probability that they truly are ht35.  [Presently], The total cost of the tests would be $28.70 (less if they had already ordered advanced tests in the
past).   See the ht 35 project at:  http://www.familytreedna.com/public/ht35/
The following is quoted from the goals statement of the ht35 project: "Our goal is to investigate the relationship between YCC Haplogroup R1b1c and
TaqI 49a,f haplotype 35 (aka ht35).  So far, no SNP has been found to distinguish ht35 from other forms of R1b1c (including the western European ht15).
Our first working hypothesis is that all ht35 haplotypes will be R1b1c* (i.e. negative for known all SNPs known to define subclades of R1b1c).
Our second working hypothesis is that ht35 contains much higher frequencies of DYS393=12 and DYS461=11 than ht15.
Our third working hypothesis is that ht35 contains much higher frequencies of DYF385=10,10 than ht15.
Therefore, our present focus is on accumulating extended Y-SNP and Y-STR testing on any R1b1c* haplotypes exhibiting DYS393=12, DYS461=11 and/or
DYF385=10,10 with the hope of finding reliable ways of distinguishing ht35 from ht15 without the need to depend on the expensive, unpleasant and
(at the moment) commercially unavailable TaqI 49a,f test."   One can hope that further research interest and a narrowing of focus will lead to definitive
  TaqI 49a,f testing !

Note 1)  This page was initiated in late 2003 and early 2004.   Gradually the chart has been enhanced and data has been added.
The intention was  to gather DNA Results relating to R1b individuals who exhibit the DYS393=12 allele in order to be able to analyze
the data for patterns and structure which might provide clues as to the nature and origins of occurances of the allele in connection with the
BORDER REIVER FAMILIES DNA STUDY. See:                   http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegalstrongs/dnareivers.htm        and       Background of Border Reivers "DYS393=12" Y-DNA Study; and
see   Discussion of the Hypothesis for the motivations behind the study and this page. Jim Elliott, one of the collaborators in
the study, has prepared an in-depth  Discussion of Methods of Analyzing "Deep Ancestry" He has gone on to collect a
large number of Haplotypes from amongst studies of various surnames found along the Anglo-Scottish Border. See his webpages: Note 4)   FTDNA offers a  number of SNP's downstream from any of their "estimates"  of participants' Haplogroup.    Other testing
"All Border Reivers by Surname DNA Study" and "All Border Reivers by Haplogroup DNA Study" It has become clear there organizations presently also offer  "in-depth" SNP testing,  including additional SNP's "downstream" from the general Haplogroup SNP
there is a wide range of Haplogroups found along the Borders, and indeed, throughout Britain.   Haplogroups such as C, G, I, J2, K2, N, determinant.  Thus,   FTDNA & other companies test R1b  for the presence of SNP=P25+, and offer additional downstream SNP's:
P, Q, R, R1, R1a, and R1b are all found in the area.   Sources may have included the Celts, Roman Legionaires, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, and  DNA Heritage offers a range of SNP's which can be found at: DNA Heritage "Y-SNP Tests"
