IRELAND/ENGLAND - R1b1

The results for Kit# 73275, EKA Samuel Drake of England were added to our project on 03 Nov 2006 and were an exact 12 marker match with Kit# 23752, EKA George W. Drake of Ireland.  This match moved one more member out of the Drake Orphan Brigade!

DUTCH DRAKES - R1b1

All eight donors in this group match exactly on all 12 markers, meaning that all six donors have a 70.69% chance of sharing a common ancestor within the past 12 generations or sometime close to 1700AD (assuming 25 years per generation).   Family tradition for the donor of kit number N55018, EKA Pascual Juica, claims that an ancestor of Pascual Juica was the illegitimate son of Sir Francis Drake.  These results disprove that theory but it does appear that the Juica family shares a common ancestry with our Dutch Drakes.  We need an upgrade to this kit to support that connection.  Pasual Juica's matches diverged on the higher markers.  EKAs William T. Drake and Stephen Drake are a 64/67 match meaning they have a 92% chance of sharing a common ancestor within 12 generations.

FRANCIS DRAKE OF NEW YORK - R1b1

Kit #32665 has a 4 mutation genetic distance from kits 17639 and 2935 meaning the donors have a 94.15% chance of sharing a common ancestor within Twenty generations.  Kits 17639 and 2935 have a 2 mutation genetic distance meaning that these two donors have a 99.40% chance of sharing a common ancestor within twenty generations.

Kit #25675, Francis Drake has a two mutation genetic difference with 11 other donors in our entire database, meaning that this donor has a 11.56% chance of sharing a common ancestor with any of these other donors within the past 12 generations.  I originally placed this kit in this group because this appeared to be the most likely place for a match.  I may move this kit to the Drake Orphan Brigade.

VIRGINIA - R1b1

Using EKA William Drake, Kit #5372, as the base result for comparison, all of the tests in this group are within 1 or 2 mutations of the base test result.  This likely means that there is a recent common ancestor but the 12 marker tests are not sufficient to allow to conclude that with any degree of assurance.  These kits really need to be upgraded.

We do have higher resolution results for Thomas Drake, Jr. (23727), Osborne Drake (26298), Archibald Drake (99633) and Epaphroditus Drake (2911).  Using the 25 marker results, we can estimate that there is a 75% chance that these donors share a common ancestor within 12 generations.  Kit #23727 (Thomas Drake, Jr.) has upgraded to 67 markers.  Upgrading the other two kits to 67 markers would greatly increase our understanding of the relationship between these three kits.  (Not to mention that the Kit#23727 donor's money will be wasted if no one else in this group upgrades.)

The 25/25 match between James Drake (Kit# 4742) and Daniel Drake (Kit# 4948) indicates that these two donors have a 84.92% chance of sharing a common ancestor within the past eight generations (or about 200 years).  After the upgrade, we find that John Drake (11672) is a 37/37 match with James Drake (4742) indicating that these two donors have a 97.28% chance of sharing a common ancestor within the past eight generations.  Philander Drake (29919) and John Drake (11672) are 12/12 matches with each other and both are within 1 mutation of the other three tests (on 12 makers) and thus are likely related, but we need to see some higher resolutions to these as well.

ISLE OF WIGHT CO., VA - R1b1 Using Nathaniel M. Drake (10785) as the base kit for this group, we find that both Richard Drake (4926) and Simon Drake (5051) are within one mutation on the 37 marker results.  We would estimate that these three donors have a 97.21% chance of sharing a common ancestor within the past 12 generations (or back to the time period when Richard Drake lived).  Hezekiah Drake's donor (8781) is two mutations distance from the Nathaniel M. Drake donor, resulting in a 91.03% probability of a common ancestor within twelve generations.  This may be a recent mutation that we need to investigate.  EKA John Drake (4743) is a 12/12 match with Nathaniel Drake and their 12 generation probability is 70.69%.   According to my records, EKA Simon Drake (1795) is actually a female line and not relevant for our project.  The close relationship on 12 markers (2 mutations) is intriguing though.

Donors for EKA Thomas Drake (Kits 5715, 4145 and 4113) are 11/12 matches with Kit #s25372 and 125820.  There is a 32.64% chance that all five donors share a common ancestor within the past 12 generations.  The same probability exists for a common ancestor with EKA Nathaniel L. Drake (10785), however, that relationship begins to fall apart with the 25 marker test results (3 mutation distance).  We should upgrade Kit #s 25372 and 4113 to 37 markers for a better comparison.

NEAR MATCHES - R1b1

These near matches were so close on the 12 marker test but fell apart on the higher resolutions and do not likely share common ancestors with anyone in our database.  Thomas Drake (6766) is a close match, 11/12,  with Thomas Drake (25372) of the IOW Drakes but we need to see an upgrade to substantiate that.  After the upgrade, Thomas Drake (6766) has been moved to Canada.

* These tests was processed by DNA Heritage which does not use the markers shown with dashes in the results columns.  Also marker GATA H4 is labeled as TAGA H4 by DNA Heritage and will always be one mutation higher than the value calculated by FTDNA.  This donor's TAGA H4 value was 12 which translates to 11 for our purposes on marker GATA H4.
