St Thomas`s Parish Church

Mellor

The church dedicated to St James, (sic) which is of stone, is erected on a commanding situation, a short distance from the village: the Rev. Matthew Freeman enjoys the curacy for life: the gift of the living is in the Thornton family. Here is a small Sunday School, belonging to the church, and Wesleyan and primitive methodist chapels. In a vault in the churchyard is a coffin, cut out of the solid stone; the lid of which is of the same material, and is covered with masonic characters cut in the stone; the person for whom this substantial and final requisite was made is still living, and personally superintended its construction. Pigot 1835

Marriages Mellor is part of Glossop parish. Whilst people were married at Mellor before Hardwicke`s Marriage Act of 1754, most people from the village would have married at Glossop church after this date. However according to the Phillimore transcript several marriages took place at the church after 1754 - which would make them technically invalid.

I have come across one entry in Glossop Parish registers showing a marriage at Mellor -

26 June 1694 John VARNHAM and Martha HOLLINGWORTH Married at Mellor

There are probably others but I was researching the Hollingworth surname at the time.

The Derbyshire Ancestral Research Group Index states that they have a Burial Plan for St Thomas`s. -  http://darg.gukutils.org.uk/MIs.shtml
