SAD ACCIDENT--Mr. Martin, the head sawyer at Moore and McClure's Steam Saw Mill, about twenty-three miles from this place, met with a serious accident on Saturday last. It appears that it was necessary, until after the logs are squared, or slabbed, to hold them on the carriage with a cant-hook. At the time the accident happened, while sawing a log through the center, it was thus held against the head blocks, when the wedge which had been driven in to spread the log and prevent the saw from binding, came out, and the saw became bound, stopping the carriage with a sudden jerk, and throwing the cant-hook from the hands of the man who held it, the handle striking Mr. Martin, who was standing near the saw, with great violence on the forehead, fracturing his skull. Dr. Palmer, of this place, was sent for, who immediately went out. Though the injuries are very serious, the Dr. has hopes of his recovery.

We are pained to be called upon to record the death of Mr. Martin, who met with the accident at Moore & McClure's saw mill last week. He died of his injuries on last Friday, and was buried on Sunday. Reverend Mr. Griswold preached the funeral sermon at the Presbyterian Church. The house was filled to overflowing. Mr. Martin was esteemed and respected by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his loss.
