Notes:

As mentioned earlier, after being mistreated by Henry Gibbons, Williamand his brothers were raised in the household of Thomas Jeffreys whoseproperty adjoined that of Captain George Lamberton (see 1641 map of NewHaven, listed under George Lamberton ). When William reached his majorityhe was the brother who was the most instrumental in regaining theirfather's property from Gibbons. On January 3, 1664, William obtained awarrant for Gibbons to give an account of his father's estate. The case was postponed time after time until, on June 10, 1674, it was settledwith Gibbons making restitution in which the plaintiff "seemed to besatisfied". William and Elizabeth Lamberton certainly knew each other as children but, for some reason, Elizabeth married a Daniel Sellivant when she was ofage. Apparently Daniel died before fathering any children by Elizabethwhereupon she subsequently marri ed William. Possibly, as a marriagedowry, Elizabeth gave him a farm in West Haven which originally was a1/6th share of the property which she inherited from her father. William became one of the first residents of West Haven when he built hishouse on Lamberton Farm. He also owned 144 acres on Long Island Soundnear Oyster River. In 1664 he was master of the sloop COCKE, makingvoyages out of New Haven. In earl y West Haven town records William isreferred to as a "planter"; in later records he is described as a"husbandman". He was nominated a Freeman (one having exclusive rights inthe community) of the Colony of Connecticut on May 13, 1669. He and hisw ife were admitted as members of the First Church of New Haven on April28, 1686. The disposition of his property upon his death is not known. Proof: (1) "TROWBRIDGE GENEALOGY", by F. B. Notes:

Elizabeth's father, Captain George Lamberton, has been immortalized in apoem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow as captain of the legendary "PhantomShip" which sailed out of New Haven one bitter cold winter day in 1646,never to be heard from again. Th e following spring a cloud-likeapparition appeared in the harbor of New Haven which the settlers thoughtlooked like the "Fellowship" which Captain Lamberton sailed off to awatery grave, taking 70 souls down with him. Elizabeth's Lamberton ancestry has been traced back to her greatgrandfather, Richard, who was born, probably in London, in about 1555.Her lineage is attached for reference.

Notes:

As a young man, Thomas Trowbridge settled in Exeter where he was engagedin business as a wool mercer. He became a member of the powerfulMerchants and Adventurer's Guild. His wife Elizabeth Marshall's father,John Marshall, was Sheriff, Alderma n and Mayor of Exeter (1615) and hergrandfather, Richard Bevys (Beavis), was Mayor of Exeter from 1600 - 1603when he died in office. John Marshall, in addition to his politicaloffices, was a successful merchant. It was probably through hisconnec tions that Thomas was able to gain entrance to this Guild. Possibly, in hopes of furthering his fortune, Thomas decided to take hisfamily to America to set up his business there. He apparently did notintend to make the American Colonies his home because he left his oldestson, John, with his father in Ta unton. He landed his family atDorchester, MA. in about 1636. He and his wife are noted in Dorchesterchurch records as "Mr. and Mrs." Trowbridge, a distinction confined atthat time to persons of established gentility. His wife was a member ofth e Dorchester church in 1637-38 and their youngest son, James, wasbaptized there. Thomas and Elizabeth must have found it a considerablehardship to live in the newly settled town of Dorchester, accustomed asthey were to the comforts of a city lik e Exeter. Additionally, there wasconsiderable friction among differing factions within the church. Thomas and his family left Dorchester in about 1638 and moved to the NewHaven Plantation. His name does not appear among those subscribed to thearticles of agreement at the organization of the church or body politicthere in June, 1639. He may ha ve been absent from New Haven at the timeor, as this Fundamental Agreement, as it was afterward called, requiredthat "church members only shall be free burgesses". He may not have beeneligible to sign it for there is no evidence that he ever seve red hisconnections with the Church of England and became a member of the PuritanChurch. New Haven records nearly always recorded his name with the prefix, "Mr." In the list of Proprietors of the Plantation in 1641, he was creditedwith five heads in his family. They were: himself, his wife and threesons, Thomas, William and James . His estate was given as 500 pounds, alarge sum for that place and time and it was among the larger of the 123estates mentioned in the listing. He appeared to have spent very little time in New Haven, making severalvoyages to Barbados and England in pursuit of his business. His wifedied in about 1641, possibly in the spring or summer. He returned toEngland at about this time, possibl y to settle her estate and intended tosend for his sons at a later date. No record has been found proving theexact date he left but it was before the fall of 1641. When he returnedto Taunton he got caught up in the English Civil War which starte d aboutthat time. He served as a Captain in the Parlimentary Troops, servingunder Colonel Blake in the defence of Taunton. He never returned toAmerica. Some sources say that he married his first cousin, Frances Godsall, widowShattuck, daughter of his aunt DorothieTrowbridge Godsall in England inFebruary, 1640. The author questions whether this assumption iscorrect. There was another Thomas Trow bridge mentioned in the 1620 willof Thomas Trowbridge, the Elder, as a nephew. It is logical to assumethat this latter Thomas was probably the man who married Frances in 1740,he being possibly an elderly man and she a middle aged widow. During his final absence Thomas left his sons under the care of hissteward, Henry Gibbons, who appeared to be an unfaithful servant whoseized Thomas' property and deserted the three boys. Town records showwhere the boys were declared wards of th e Colony in November, 1641 andthe court placed them under the care of a nearby neighbor, SergeantThomas Jeffreys and his wife, who took them into their home to rear andeducate until "such time as their father shall come over or send to takeorde r concerning them." Thomas regularily corresponded from England tothe authorities in New Haven to bring Gibbons to an account for hisbreach of trust, but Gibbons kept the property for many years. When hissons became of age, Thomas gave them pow er of attorney to regain hisproperty from Gibbons. The sons sued Gibbons and were successful inreclaiming their father's estate in 1680 which he had previously giventhem on a share and share alike basis. Gibbons died without any childrenin 1686. Notes:

Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Trowbridge and mother of his children, wasbaptized at St. Mary Arches Church, Exeter, March 24, 1562. She was amember of a family at the center of commercial and civic power in thecathedral city. This was amply set fort h in 1905 in an article by EmoryMcClintock, "Thomas Trowbridge and Elizabeth Marshall", NEHGR 59:291-97(1905). Elizabeth's father, the Alderman John Marshall, Mayor in 1615,died before his daughter's marriage. Elizabeth's lineage has been traced back through her mother's ancestry to Lawrence Prowse, born in 1480, sonof John Prowse and Joan Orchard and brother of Richard Prowse, anancestor of Elizabeth's mother-in-law, Agnes Prowse Trowbridge.

Notes:

John Trowbridge was even more prominent than his father. He was a woolmerchant and had a shop next to his father on Fore Street. Moniescollected in 1611 for the relief of plague victims at Minehead andDunster were brought to his house, and in 16 25 he supervised the repairof the Taunton House of Correction, and provided a field at West Monktonfor tents to quarantine travellers suspected of bringing the plague fromLondon to Taunton. He was regularily churchwarden of St. Mary Magdalen, twi ce mayor of Taunton (1629-30 and 1637-8), and traded with London andBristol.
