Dau. of Sir Geoffrey Gilbert of Compton Castle, m.p. for Totnes, 1326 Sir Geoffrey m. Joan, dau. and co-heir of William de Compton in the manorof Paignton, Devon. These two were ancestors of Sir Humphrey Gilbert ofCompton Castle, b.1539, knighted 1-1-1570, M.P. for Plymouth 1571, whofounded the colony of Newfoundlan d 1583, lost at sea, 9-9-1583. SirHumphrey was half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh, Captain of Her MajestyQueen Elizabeth I Guard and colonizer of Virginia. Sir Walter sailedwith Sir Humphrey in an accompanying vessel on voyages to America in the 16th century. Sir Humphrey's son, Capt. Raleigh Gilbert, sailed from Plymouth, Englandin the "Mary and John" on 5-31-1607 and arrived on the coast of what isnow the State of Maine on 8-1-1607, where they built a fort called "FortSt. George" on the Sagadahoc (Ke nnebec) River. Captain Gilbertd.12-30-1634 and was buried in Marldon Church near Compton Castle.
