Richard Bevys died unexpectedly on August 26, 1603 while serving as LordMayor of Exeter. Prior to becoming mayor, he was the High Sheriff in1591-92. He was a very prosperous woolen merchant. He left no will buthis inventory, made on parchmen t paper sewn end to end, made a rolltwenty one feet long. He was the grandfather of Elizabeth MarshallTrowbridge.

Robert Prowse was founder of the Tiverton , Devon, branch. He was namedas younger son of John and Joan Orchard in Pole's "Description". HisProwse shield of Arms, with 4th son's martlet for difference, hung in St.Peter's Church, Tiverton, wher e he and Christian are buried, according tothe will of his younger son Robert. Henry VIII's general pardon, at hisaccession, named Robert, Sr. as of Chevithorn Manor. The lord of thisuntil 1745 was Phillip Champerown, whose daughter mothered Si r WalterRaleigh and Sir Humphrey Gilbert. The overlord was the Earl ofWestmorland. Robert was feoffee of a Tiverton charitable trust, whichrevealed his death before 1529. He paid tax on "goods" totaling L70 inChagford, Tiverton and Kenton in 15 24. Robert's granddaughter was Richarda Prowse Gifford, Lady of TivertonCastle. A deed to a Chevythorn parcel of land, 1589, revealed that hergrandfather was "Robert, son of John Prowse of Chagford". Richard'sbrother, George Prowse, of Wellington , Somerset, signed the Visitationpedigree with Prowse quarterings down to Orchard, inclusive. (Cal. Pat.R. 8 Hen. 8.; The Gen., cit., p.ibid.).
