Notes:

William TROWBRIDGE (12) was born on 3 Sep 1633 in Exeter, England. He died in Nov 1688 in New Haven, CT. William Trowbridge was brought asa child, by his parents, from England, first to Dorchester in theMassachusetts Bay colony, and the n to the plantation of New Haven (CT).When his father was called back to England, he and his brothers were left in the charge ofhis father's former servant, Henry Gibbons. William Trowbridge is usuallydescribed in the public records of that time as a "planter," and later onas a "husbandman." In 166 4 he appears to have been master of the sloop"Cocke", making voyages out of New Haven. He was married to ElizabethLAMBERTON on 9 Mar 1656 in Milford, CT. Elizabeth LAMBERTON was born in 1630 in London, England. She died in1716 in West Haven, Conn.. Children were: i. William TROWBRIDGE was born on 12 Nov 1657 in New Haven, CT ii. Thomas TROWBRIDGE was born on 2 Oct 1659 in New Haven, CT. iii. Elizabeth TROWBRIDGE was born on 5 Jan 1661 in New Haven, CT 768 iv. Deacon James TROWBRIDGE. v. Margaret TROWBRIDGE was born on 1 Jun 1666 in New Haven, CT vi. Hannah TROWBRIDGE was born on 6 Jul 1668 in New Haven, CT vii. Abigail TROWBRIDGE was born on 7 Oct 1670 in New Haven, CT viii. Samuel TROWBRIDGE was born on 7 Oct 1670 in New Haven, CT ix. Mary TROWBRIDGE was born on 12 Oct 1672 in New Haven, CT x. Joseph TROWBRIDGE was born in 1676 in New Haven, CT ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ William Trowbridge was brought in childhood by his parents from England, first to Dorchester in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and then to theplantation of New Haven in New Haven colony. When his father was calledback to England (presumably by th e civil war there), he and his brothers,Thomas (bapt. Dec. 11, 1631 in Taunton, Somersetshrie, England) and James(born in 1636 in New Haven, CT) were left in the charge of their father'sformer servant, Henry Gibbons. The eldest brother, John Trow bridge(bapt. Nov. 5, 1629 in Taunton, Somersetshire, England) had been left inEngland. It appears that his mother, Elizabeth Marshall, may have diedabout 1641 in New Haven as no further mention is made of her. Mr.Gibbons mismanaged their father' s property left for the boy's support, and after a time, they were taken away from him by the town authoritiesand put under the care of Sergt. Thomas Jeffrey and his wife, friends oftheir father, "to be well educated and nurtured in the fear of God " andin their home William and his brothers passed their childhood. Hereceived his early education from Mr. Ezekial Cheever, famous colonialschoolmaster, and probably was under his tuition throughout his schooldays. Soon after reaching his majority, William Trowbridge made an attemptto bring Gibbons to an account for his stewardship. His efforts werecontinued over a series of years, but gained little result during hisfather's lifetime. A few years afte r the latter's death, Gibbons madesome restitution of the inheritance. William Trowbridge is usually described in the public records ofthat time as a "planter" and later on as a "husbandman". In 1664, heappears to have been master of the ship "Cocke", making voyages out ofNew Haven. In July, 1667, he sold hi s house and the lot in the village ofNew Haven, and probably about that time became one of the first residentsin the parish of West Haven. He probably built a house on that part ofthe "Lamberton Farm" that through his wife eventually came into hi spossession. His share was one-sixth of the Lamberton farm, and itincluded all the land between the present Campbell and Washington Avenuesfrom Brown Street (the site of the piano factory) nearly to Long IslandSound. He also owned 144 acre s on the Sound near Oyster River. William Trowbridge was nominated a freeman of the colony ofConnecticut on May 13, 1669. He lived on his farm in West Haven theremander of his life. He made gifts to his children during his lifetimeof much of his real estate, so that the inv entory of his estate mentionsbut 55 acres of "second division" land and a small amount of personalproperty. He made no will. He and his wife, Elizabeth Lamberton(Sellivant), were admitted members of the First Church in New Haven onApril 28, 1686 . William, who was baptized on 03-Sep-1633 at the Parish of St. Mary Archesin Exeter. William was the fourth born of the five children of Thomas andElizabeth. On 09-Mar-1655 he married Elizabeth Lamberton of thenoteworthy Lamberton family in Milford , New Haven County, Connecticut. It was William, who upon reaching his majority, attempted to bring Mr.Gibbons to an account of the moneys spent during his stewardship: "William Trowbridge propounded to ye court if he might have an account ofhis father's estate that was left in New Haven, and for this endpresented two letters from his father, one dated March 6, 1655, the otherMarch 4, 1658, wherein his father wri tes, that he marvells that there isnot an account of it given. It was told him that some time has been spentin searching ye records, but it could not be cleared. Wherefore he payingthe secretary then ye secretary would afford him that help he coul dtherein to clear it." "January 3, 1664, William Trowbridge having had a warrant for HenryGibbons to answer him in action of ye case, was now called to clear thisaction. He required of Henry Gibbons an account of his father's estatethat was left with him when he wen t to England. Wm. Trowbridge was askedby what authority he had made his demand? He showed a letter of attorneyfrom his father, which being read was allowed and accepted. Henry Gibbonssaid that he had given him an account as well as he could, bu t the estatewas taken out of his hands by order of authority here and therefore itmust be referred to ye records. The records having been looked intoformerly and matters not found so clear as was desired and there beingmuch business at this time , the case was referred to another time." At the county court held at New Haven on June 10, 1664, before JamesBishop, assistant and moderator, commissioners and a jury in the case ofTrowbridge vs. Gibbons: "Wm. Trowbridge of New Haven, plaintiff, Henry Gibbons of same place, defendant, in the action of the case for an account of the estate of Mr.Thomas Trowbridge of Taunton in the realm of England mentioned in hisletters of attorney dated ye 19t h of January, 1662, and sometime in yepossession of trust of ye said Henry ye defendant disposed of and notaccounted for." The records of the transaction concerning the estate were read. Mr.Gibbons made some restitution, in which the plaintiff "seemed to besatisfied". In 1664 William was master of the sloop COCKE, making many voyages out ofNew Haven. In July of 1667 he became one of the first residents in theparish of West New Haven. He built his house on Lamberton Farm in whichhe had received a 1/6th shar e from his father-in-law, George Lamberton. He owned an additional 144 acres on Long Island Sound near Oyster River. In early West Haven town records William is referred to as a "planter",in later records he is described as a "husbandman". Notes:

The Phantom Ship by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow In Mather's Magnolia Christi, Of the old colonial time, May be found in prose the legend That is here set down in rhyme. A ship sailed from New Haven, And the keen and frosty airs, That filled her sails in parting, Were heavy with good men's prayers. "O Lord

If it be thy pleasure"- Thus prayed the old divine- "To bury our friends in the ocean, Take them, for they are thine

" But Master Lamberton muttered, And under his breath said he, "This ship is so crank and walty I fear our grave she will be

" And the ships that came from England, When the winter months were gone, Brought no tiding of this vessel

Nor of Master Lamberton. This put the people to praying That the Lord would let them hear What in his greater wisdom He had done to friends so dear. And at last our prayers were answered: It was in the month of June An hour before sunset Of a windy afternoon. When, steadily steering landward, A ship was seen below, And they knew it was Lamberton, Master, Who sailed so long ago. On she came with a cloud of canvas, Right against the wind that blew, Until the eye could distinguish The faces of the crew. Then fell her straining top mast, Hanging tangled in the shrouds, And her sails were loosened and lifted, And blown away like clouds. And the masts, with all their rigging, Fell slowly, one by one, And the hulk dialated and vanished, As a sea-mist in the sun

And the people who saw thus marvel Each said unto his friend, That this was the mould of their vessel, and thus her tragic end. And the pastor of the villiage Gave thanks to God in Prayer, That, to quiet their troubled spirits, He had sent a Ship of Air. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For the dignity of the persons involved no other case is comparable tothe Goody Knapp case of Fairfield except that of Elizabeth Godman of NewHaven. There were present, remember, at the Ludlow libel suit, TheophilusEaton, governor of New Haven, wh ere the case was tried, Mr. StephenGoodyear, deputy governor, Francis Newman, another friend of Eaton's,William Fowler, and William Leete, the three magistrates, that is,senators, besides the array of notable witnesses. So in the case ofElizabet h Godman the governor and his deputy presided, with a similargroup of magistrates. At the trial in Hartford of John Carrington in 1662the governor and his deputy were present, but so far as I know nodignitaries were personally interested in the ca se. In this last case thelist of jurymen has been preserved; among them is at least one notablename, Mr. Tailecoat (Talcott), none less than the future major of theIndian war, father of the governor. But to return to the case ofElizabeth Godman : The case was tried in 1655; she was acquitted andreleased from prison with a reprimand in September of that year. Whatgives particular interest to the case is the way in which the Goodyearfamily was involved. Elizabeth Godman must have been a se rvant, employedapparently in different places, but often at Mr. Goodyear's. A sermon ofJohn Davenport seems to have precipitated matters; he had said that"froward discontented frame of spirit was a subject fit for ye Devill,"and some of his listen ers fitted the description to Elizabeth, whopromptly took the matter up by bringing her accusers into court, complaining that Mrs. Goodyear, Mr. Hooke, Mrs. Hooke, Mrs. Bishop, Mrs.Atwater, Hannah and Elizabeth Lamberton suspected her of bein g a witchand asking for the evidence. The chief testimony appears to have beenoffered by Hannah Lamberton, evidence of a character it would be beneatha child to offer or to consider. That was in 1653; Elizabeth was dismissed, but in 1655 was again brought up. Thistime the chief testimony was by no less a man than the deputy governorhimself; there is nothing, however, to show that he himself was active inbringing the suit; we may thin k him somewhat reluctant to do so. Thechief features of his story may be transcribed. Perhaps it should be recalled that he himself was a wealthymerchant adventurer, that on the loss of his wife in the phantom ship of1646 he had found consolation in the relict of the captain of the fatedvessel, Master Lamberton. Hence th e Lamberton daughters are hisstep-children. Hannah Goodyear was his own daughter, a little later wifeto the Rev. Samuel Wakeman of Fairfield. Goodyear's story is substantially as follows: His daghter Sellevant (Eliza Lamberton), Hanah Goodyeare, andDesire Lamberton lying together in the chamber under Eliza: Godman; afterthey were in bed heard her walke up and downe and talk aloude; . . . theyfell asleep but were awakened wi th a great jumbling at the chamber doreand something came into the chamber wch jumbled at the other end of theroome and aboutte the trunke and amonge the shooes and at the beds head;it cam nearer the bed and Hanah was afraid and called father, bu t heheard not wch made her more afraide; then clothes were pulled off theirbed by something two or three times; they held and something pulled, wchfrightened them soe that Hanah Goodyeare called her father so loude aswas thought might be hear d to the meeting house; . . . after a while Mr.Goodyeare came and found them in great fright; they lighted a candle andhe went to Eliza: Godmans Chamber . . . being asked why she went downestaires . . . she said to light a candle to looke for tw o grapes she hadlost in the flore and feared the mice would play with them in the nightand disturbe ye family, wch reason in the Courts apprehension renders hermore suspitious. When the case was disposed of in October, "she did engage beforethe court fifty pound of her estate that is in Mr. Goodyeers hand, forher good behavior, wch is further to be cleered next court, when Mr.Goodyeare is at home," Mr. Goodyea r in the meanwhile having sailed forLondon whence he never returned to America. Elizabeth Godman died 9 October, 1660. It perhaps should havebeen pointed out that Betty Brewster, Mrs. Pell's daughter, gave evidencein this case also; she seemed to have a penchant for witches. It wassomething of a craze. Note this as evidence of the credulity of the time, solemnlyattested by Jonathan Burr and Nathan Gold, assistants, that is, senators: Sd hugh [Hugh Crotia, under date of Feb. 15, 1692] asked whetherhe did not say hee had made a Contract with ye devell five years sencwith his heart and signed to ye devells book and then sealed it with hisbloud . . . he saith he did sa y so . . . and that he had ever since beenpractising Eivel against every man.1 Yet the grand jury brought in its decision, Ignoramus. Crotia wasgranted a jail delivery. 1 Witchcraft in Connecticut. Powers-Banks Ancestry, p. 271-273.

Sons Thomas (Jr.) and William emigrated withparents to Dorchester, Mass., where James Trowbridge was born; they moved to New Haven, whereElizabeth the mother died. Three children remained to have largefamilies. Thomas Sr. (No. 42) returned to Exeter to remarry, by license, widow Frances Shattuck 10 Feb. 1640 in St . David's church. She, hiscousin, was dau. of Dorothy, dau. of Thos. Trowbridge (Sr.) (see gen. 41)of Taunton. Thos. Jr. paid ? subsidy at West Muncton, nr. Taunton. By1643 they were back in New Haven, a family of 5, rated at ?OO. WhenTaunton, und er colonel, later admiral Robert Blake, was besieged by theroyalists, Thomas (No. 42) served as captain in Cromwell's army, 1645.Later, he supported a wounded soldier's pension claim at Taunton Court ofSessions. He gave his New England sons powe r of attorney for propertythere 14 Jan. 1664. He and they traded to the Azores from both sides ofthe Atlantic. He was buried at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Taunton,Somerset, 7 Feb. 1672. (Trowbridge Family (1872); The Gen, cit). He wasmarried to El izabeth MARSHALL on 20 Dec 1624 in St. Mary's Arches. 3073. Elizabeth MARSHALL (20) was born on 24 Mar 1602 in Exeter, England. She died in 1641 in New Haven, Conn.. Elizabeth, first wife of ThomasTrowbridge, and mother of his children, wasbapt. at St. Mary ArchesChurch, Exeter, 24 Mar. 1562 of a fami ly at the centre of commercial andcivic power in the cathedral city. This was amply set forth in 1905 inan article by Emory McClintock, "Thomas Trowbridge and ElizabethMarshall", NEHGR 59:291-97 (1905). Elizabeth's father, the Alderman JohnMarsha ll, Mayor in 1615, was d. by the dau.'s marriage. Her mother Alicewas the second dau. of the name, bapt. at St. Kerrians Church, Exeter, 7June 1572, and Marshall's bride 30 Aug. 1695 at St. Mary Arches. Alice, bur. there 13 Jan. 1630/1, left to he r favourite dau. Mrs ElizabethTrowbridge, 50 pounds and a 10 pounds piece of plate (PCC 23 St. John).Alice's father was Richard Beavis, who d. in office as Mayor of Exeter 26Aug. 1603. He had m. (1) Elizabeth Price, from the Welsh "Ap Rhys",mothe r of Alice Marshall, and (2) Jane, dau. of Henry Huish of Sands. Children were: i. Elizabeth TROWBRIDGE was born before 6 Mar 1627 in Exeter, England. She died before 10 May 1630 in Exeter, England. ii. John TROWBRIDGE was born before 5 Nov 1629 in Exeter, England.(21) He was buried on 16 Feb 1653. iii. Thomas TROWBRIDGE was born on 11 Dec 1631 in Exeter, England. Hewas buried. 1536 iv. William TROWBRIDGE. v. James TROWBRIDGE was born in 1636 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. ~~~~~~~~~ Thomas Trowbridge (babt. abt 1590 in Taunton, Somersetshire, England andburied 07 FEB 1672/73 in Taunton) emigrated to Dorchester, MA about 1636,leaving his eldest son, John (bapt. 5 NOV 1629 in Taunton)behind inEngland. In 1636, his youngest son , James, was born in Dorchester. In1638, Thomas settled in New Haven plantation in New Haven colony. Hiswife, Elizabeth Marshall, apparently died in New Haven or Dorchester, asno futher mention is made of her. Before September of 1641, ThomasTr owbridge returned to England, leaving his three sons, Thomas (bapt. 11DEC 1631 in Taunton), our ancestor William (bapt. 3 SEPT 1633), and babyJames in the care of his servant Henry Gibbons (see William's notes) inNew Haven, CT. Thomas Trowbridg e apparently maintained a merchant'sbusiness in Taunton, England, so possibly this needed his attention. Also, this time in history, August 1642, indicates the start of theEnglish Civil War. Taunton itself was taken by parlimentary forces in that year, and Tauntonwas under seige in 1645. He continued communication with his sons andadvised them in their education and in reclaiming their inheritance fromMr. Gibbons. His Trowbridge coat of arms states "Sit Pons Firmis", "Let the bridge beFirm". Thomas, the second of the nine children of John and Agnes (Prowse) Trowbridge. He was born 08-Feb-1597 at Taunton, Somersetshire, Englandand baptized at the Parish of St. Petrock. He married Elizabeth Marshallon 26-Mar-1627 at the Parish of St. Mary Arches in Exeter, Devonshire,England. Elizabeth was the daughte r of Alice Bevys and John Marshall,Sherrif of Exeter, and granddaughter to Richard Bevys, Lord and Mayor ofExeter (elected 1600, died in Office 1603) . It is Thomas who is ourfirst ancestor in America, having arrived at Dorchester in theMassachuse tts Bay colony in 1636. Owing to some religious difficulties arising in Dorchester, Thomas movedhis family to New Haven, Connecticut sometime before 1644. Thomasactually spent very little time in America as he was involved in tradingbetween the West Indies and England . In Taunton he was a "prominentcitizen and wealthy merchant", his father having long since beenidentified with the woolen trade. As a young man, Thomas opened hisbusiness as a mercer in the city of Exeter. It is unknown exactly when Elizabeth died. What is known is that in 1644Thomas left his sons in the care of his servant, Henry Gibbons. Heremained in close contact with the boys, but never returned to America.Thomas died in Taunton in 1673. Mr. Gi bbons was charged by New Haven townauthorities with mismanaging the property and moneys of Thomas and theboys (Thomas, William & James) were then placed in the care of Sgt.Thomas Jeffrey and his wife, there they passed their boyhood. ~~~~~~~ Thomas Trowbridge, son of Edmund Trowbridge, mentioned above, was bornin England, about 1610. He came from Taunton, Somersetshire, England, andsettled in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony, as early as 1636. Hiswife joined the church ther e in 1636, and their son was born there thatyear. He drew a lot of land January 2, 1637, and at various times afterthat. Later in 1638 or early in 1639, however, he removed to New Haven. He was in the foreign shipping business and he continue d in business, making voyages between the Barbadoes and England. He owned a house andlot in New Haven as early as 1639, but was apparently not living there. He and his wife and three children were living there in 1643 and he wasrated as one of th e richest men of the colony, paying taxes on fivehundred pounds. In 1644 Mr. Cheever, the celebrated pedagogue, receivedpayment for teaching Trowbridge's children; evidently the children werewell educated for their day. He went to England in 1644 , leaving histhree sons and all his American property in charge of Henry Gibbons, whoproved unfaithful to his trust. Sergeant Thomas Jeffries took the boysinto his own family. Thomas Trowbridge wrote often from England to haveGibbons brough t to account, but without avail. Even a power of attorneyto his sons was not effective. Thomas Trowbridge died in Taunton,England, February 7, 1672, and soon afterward Gibbons gave to the sons adeed of everything he had, even to the bed he slep t on, in an endeavor tomake good the property of the family. When Gibbons died in 1686 ThomasTrowbridge was appointed his administrator and recovered all there wasleft of his father's estate in New Haven. The sons of Thomas Trowbridge(1), were : Thomas, born 1632, at Taunton, England; William, born 1634;James, born 1636, at Dorchester, Massachusetts, see forward. ~~~~~ TROWBRIDGE, Thomas, from Eng. to Dorchester, Mass., 1634; settled atNew Haven, Conn., 1639; returned to England leaving his sons; of theirdirect male descendants 56 fought in Am. In the parish register of St. Mary Arches appears the following entry:"26 March 1627 Mr. Thomas Trobrige and Elizabeth daughter of Mrs. AliceMarshall widoe married, Jeremy Short parson." FROM: TROWBRIDGE GENEALOGY Both the Trowbridge and Marshall families were prominent and well to dofamilies in Taunton, England. The Trowbridges were identified withwoolen trade and manufacturing. Thomas Trowbridge left his son John in England and the rest of the familycame to Dorchester, Mass. sometime about 1636. It is believed his wifedied in New Haven, Conn. about 1641. He returned to England to settle hisaffairs, leaving his sons wit h a servant. The Civil War in England it isbelieved kept him from returning to America. THOMAS TROWBRIDGE, THE FIRST TO COME TO AMERICA, CIRCA 1636 - written byunknown descendant "For what reason did Thomas Trowbridge come to America? First let me goover some oral history passed down over the years in our branch of theTrowbridge family. Thomas Trowbridge came to this country to start atrade route, it was a business reaso n only. He planned to return toEngland after his business was fully established. The reason he broughthis family was he would be here for a few years. Note, he left hisoldest son John in England under the care of his father, why? When ThomasTrowb ridge's wife died in America, it was believed that the reason heleft his sons here under the care of a former servant, was that heplanned to return. Our oral history has Thomas returning to England tosettle the estate of his late wife. Why di d he remain in England, andleave his sons in America? Or why didn't he send for his sons and havethem return to England? This was a mystery for our branch of family.Note, on January 19, 1663-4, Thomas Trowbridge executed and sent to histhree son s a power of attorney, making over to them jointly and severallyhis property in New England wherever found, to be retained and equallydivided between them." "In 1991 I wrote to the Somerset County Council, Taunton, England. I wassent a packet of material from which I found the following on ThomasTrowbridge, which gives a clue to his return from America, circa 1641. Itstates, Thomas Trowbridge serve d as a Captain in the Parliamentary Armyduring the English Civil War. This suggests that his reasons for leavingEngland in 1636 were religious and that he returned to England to takepart in the resistance to King Charles I. The document is clea r that heserved directly under the Roundhead leader, Robert Blake, commander ofthe besieged garrison of Taunton in 1645, and probably remained inEngland to enjoy the more liberal regime of Cromwell's Commonwealth. Bythe time the restoration of Cha rles II took place in 1660 he would havebeen at least 60 years of age and probably too old to remove himself toAmerica." "In the Quarter Sessions records for Somerset (Somerset Record Office)are a number of petitions, mostly undated but of about 1650, addressed tothe Justices of the Peace from Parliamentary supporters of King CharlesI. Among them is that of Emanuel l Butler of Taunton, cordwainer(shoemaker) part of which reads as follows: 'That Emanuell Butler duringthe several seiges of Taunton was a faithfull souldier in the Statesservice under the command of Captain Thomas Trubbridge in the regiment ofCol lonel Robert Blake in which service he received a shott from the enemythrough the bodie and stood in great hazard of his life. By the meanes heis in a great measure disenabled to gett maintainance for himselfe andhis wife and child and he hath los t three sonnes in the States service' -The petition is supported and signed: Thos. Trowbridge." "There can be little doubt that the Captain under whom Butler served wasour ancestor after his return from America and before his death in 1672.There can be little doubt, having this evidence, that it was theoppressive regime of Charles I that dec ided Thomas Trowbridge to emigrateto the New World circa 1636 and that he returned to England to fight as a'Roundhead' officer in the Parliamentary army. Robert Blake was one ofthe most famous Parliamentary leaders and under Cromwell's Commonwealt hbecame Admiral of the English navy. Despite appalling siege conditions heheld Taunton against superior forces which destroyed at least a third ofits houses, until its relief in 1645. The inference of the above petitionis that Thomas Trowbridge wa s present in Taunton throughout the siege." TAUNTON DEANE EXTRACTS, RECORDS FROM TAUNTON, ENGLAND "April 3, 1652, Thomas Trowbridge of Taunton, gent., was admitted to aparcel of land late of the waste of the lord, lying behind the stable ofthe castle of Taunton and near the west gate of the said castle, containing three daynes of land and on e little parcel of land lying nearthe river of Tone and the pond of the castle called the Mote, extendingfrom the water gate to the said parcel of land behind the stable, containing four daynes of land in the tithing of Hull, sometime the landof Wi lliam Hill and late of John Trowbridge, deceased, by surrender ofJohn Lane. (the surrender to Lane, made by John Trowbridge in 1649, was amortgage to secure 43 pounds 4s)" "This is the only found information that Thomas Trowbridge held land inTaunton after his return from America, and the only information relatingto his inheriting land from his father, John Trowbridge." RECORDS FROM TAUNTON, THOMAS TROWBRIDGE, OUR FOUNDER "A subsidy roll (taxation list) for Taunton Borough, dated 1581/2, heldat the Somerset Record Office, shows Thomas Trobrydge as paying 6 poundsin respect of goods. Only seven others were paying more than this andeleven further men were also assess ed at 6 pounds. This shows that Thomaswas a man of wealth" "The Taunton Deane manor records show the gradual build-up of the estateof Thomas Trowbridge, date 1620. The commercial importance of ThomasTrowbridge within the borough is shown by the number of licences which hepurchased to prosecute tenant s of Taunton Deane (mainly for debe) beyondthe jurisdiction of the manor court." "Extract from the fine books of Taunton Deane manor. Records of absoluteand conditional surrenders, 1630-1649. 'January 9, 1632/3. ThomasTrowbridge surrendered a cottage with curtilage of 3 daynes of land inMillane, a cottage in the same tithing , a messuage and 5 acres ofbondland in the said tithing, and another messuage and 5 acres ofbondland there, late of Thomas Trowbridge his grandfather, to use ofFrancis Ancketill of Yard, esq.'" http://207.82.250.251/cgi-bin/linkrd?http://members.tripod.com/~Silvie/Trowbridge.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Quoting from Gary Boyd Roberts' Ancestral Roots of Certain AmericanColonists: "When Taunton, under colonel, later admiral Robert Blake, was besieged bythe royalists, Thomas served as captain in Cromwell's army, 1645. Later,he supported a wounded soldier's pension claim at Taunton Court ofSessions. He gave his New England so ns power of attorney for propertythere 14 Jan 1664. He and they traded to the Azores from both sides ofthe Atlantic. He was buried at St. Mary Magdalen church, Taunton,Somerset, 7 FEB 1672." After he returned to England, he married Frances Shattuck 10 Feb 1640.She was actually his cousin, since her mother was Dorothy, daughter ofThomas's uncle Thomas Trowbridge. I have wondered if she might have beenunwilling to remain in New England . They seem to have traveled back andforth at least once, since they were listed in New have in 1643 as afamily of 5 (Thomas, Frances and the three younger sons). Thomas's oldestson John remained in England, where he died in 1653. So Thomas seem s tohave kept property and business dealings on both sides of the water. http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/lamberton/messages/82.html

Seth Trowbridge, from Montg omery county, located in the early part of 1779 on lot 59, and during the next year Samuel Trowbridge, Winnie Hyatt and Samuel Orvis settled on the same lot. Trowbridge served in the War of the Revolution and drew the lot. The Widow Trowbridge , of Homer, mother of Mrs. Oliver Glover, of Homer, was a daughter of Mr. Hyatt. Mr. Orvis was from Norfolk, Conn. He subsequently removed to Prattsburg, Steuben county, where he died in 1851 at the advanced age of ninety-eight years. Samuel Trowb ridge was the first inn-keeper in the town of Preble. https://sites.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/smhist/shchap26.htm The first annual town meeting of the town of Preble was convened at the house of John Gill on the 3d of May, 1808, when the following officers were elected: -- Overseers of the highways - John Huntington, Nathaniel Gay, Leonard L. Conine, Richard Whitbeck, Timothy Brown, Ebenezer Harrington, Moulton Craw, Gad Merrill, Abraham Rulofsen, John Gillett, John Raymond, Seth Trowbridge, Levi Johnson, Bela Harsm ar. == Seth came with his older brother to Sheffield, Mass with his older brothers. He, like them served in the Revolution. He enlisted for three years from Sheffield in October 1781 in Capt. Nathan Dick's Company. Col Michael Jackson's regiment, Massach usetts Line. He went from Sheffield to West Point, New York and from there with his company to keep the jail at Westchester, New York and then came back to West Point. From there he went with his regiment to Morristown, New Jersey and then returne d to West Point, where he was discharged in February 1783. After the war he was engaged in farming for several years in farming in Sheffield. In 1787 he moved to the town of Williston, Vermont. He moved his family to Florida, New York about 1794 adn six years later to Preble, New York. His farm lay on th e present Tully line and adjoined that of his brother Samuel. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church in Preble. "Once on a time there was a string of Trowbridge farms about a mile long, one-half mile south from Tully village, in the town of Preble, commencing with William and his family of boys on the north.. Milo, my father, next; Uncle James next; and Unc le Hiram with his boys in the old, big red house of Grandfather Seth; next was Uncle Samuel, brother of Seth. All of these were farmers brought up to the trade of farming, and it was a real Trowbridge neighborhood. But oh, how changed it now is

I am the only Trowbridge living in the two towns; all have passed away, or wandered off th the Far West. Grandfather Seth was a strong, enterprising Yankee. Most of the seven sons were six-footers, and the six daughters were as fine-looking girl s as could be found round about."
