ABRIDGED COMPENDIUM, Frederick Virkus GOODYEAR, Stephen (d 1658), from Eng. to New Haven Colony, 1638; dep.gov., 1643-58; com- mr. for United Colonies, 1643, 46; lost at sea onreturn to Eng.; m Margaret Lamberton; m 2d widow of Capt. GeorgeLamberton. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~For the dignity of the persons involved noother case is comparable to the Goody Knapp case of Fairfield except thatof Elizabeth Godman of Ne w Haven. There were present, remember, at theLudlow libel suit, Theophilus Eaton, governor of New Haven, where thecase was tried, Mr. Stephen Goodyear, deputy governor, Francis Newman, another friend of Eaton's, William Fowler, and William Leete , the threemagistrates, that is, senators, besides the array of notable witnesses. So in the case of Elizabeth Godman the governor and his deputy presided, with a similar group of magistrates. At the trial in Hartford of JohnCarrington in 1662 th e governor and his deputy were present, but so faras I know no dignitaries were personally interested in the case. In thislast case the list of jurymen has been preserved; among them is at leastone notable name, Mr. Tailecoat (Talcott), none les s than the futuremajor of the Indian war, father of the governor. But to return to thecase of Elizabeth Godman: The case was tried in 1655; she was acquittedand released from prison with a reprimand in September of that year. Whatgives particula r interest to the case is the way in which the Goodyearfamily was involved. Elizabeth Godman must have been a servant, employedapparently in different places, but often at Mr. Goodyear's. A sermon ofJohn Davenport seems to have precipitated matter s; he had said that"froward discontented frame of spirit was a subject fit for ye Devill,"and some of his listeners fitted the description to Elizabeth, whopromptly took the matter up by bringing her accusers into court, complaining that Mrs. Goody ear, Mr. Hooke, Mrs. Hooke, Mrs. Bishop, Mrs.Atwater, Hannah and Elizabeth Lamberton suspected her of being a witchand asking for the evidence. The chief testimony appears to have beenoffered by Hannah Lamberton, evidence of a character it woul d be beneatha child to offer or to consider. That was in 1653; Elizabeth was dismissed, but in 1655 was again brought up. Thistime the chief testimony was by no less a man than the deputy governorhimself; there is nothing, however, to show that he himself was active inbringing the suit; we may thin k him somewhat reluctant to do so. Thechief features of his story may be transcribed. Perhaps it should be recalled that he himself was a wealthymerchant adventurer, that on the loss of his wife in the phantom ship of1646 he had found consolation in the relict of the captain of the fatedvessel, Master Lamberton. Hence th e Lamberton daughters are hisstep-children. Hannah Goodyear was his own daughter, a little later wifeto the Rev. Samuel Wakeman of Fairfield. Goodyear's story is substantially as follows: His daghter Sellevant (Eliza Lamberton), Hanah Goodyeare, andDesire Lamberton lying together in the chamber under Eliza: Godman; afterthey were in bed heard her walke up and downe and talk aloude; . . . theyfell asleep but were awakened wi th a great jumbling at the chamber doreand something came into the chamber wch jumbled at the other end of theroome and aboutte the trunke and amonge the shooes and at the beds head;it cam nearer the bed and Hanah was afraid and called father, bu t heheard not wch made her more afraide; then clothes were pulled off theirbed by something two or three times; they held and something pulled, wchfrightened them soe that Hanah Goodyeare called her father so loude aswas thought might be hear d to the meeting house; . . . after a while Mr.Goodyeare came and found them in great fright; they lighted a candle andhe went to Eliza: Godmans Chamber . . . being asked why she went downestaires . . . she said to light a candle to looke for tw o grapes she hadlost in the flore and feared the mice would play with them in the nightand disturbe ye family, wch reason in the Courts apprehension renders hermore suspitious. When the case was disposed of in October, "she did engage beforethe court fifty pound of her estate that is in Mr. Goodyeers hand, forher good behavior, wch is further to be cleered next court, when Mr.Goodyeare is at home," Mr. Goodyea r in the meanwhile having sailed forLondon whence he never returned to America. Elizabeth Godman died 9 October, 1660. It perhaps should havebeen pointed out that Betty Brewster, Mrs. Pell's daughter, gave evidencein this case also; she seemed to have a penchant for witches. It wassomething of a craze. Note this as evidence of the credulity of the time, solemnlyattested by Jonathan Burr and Nathan Gold, assistants, that is, senators: Sd hugh [Hugh Crotia, under date of Feb. 15, 1692] asked whetherhe did not say hee had made a Contract with ye devell five years sencwith his heart and signed to ye devells book and then sealed it with hisbloud . . . he saith he did sa y so . . . and that he had ever since beenpractising Eivel against every man.1 Yet the grand jury brought in its decision, Ignoramus. Crotia wasgranted a jail delivery. 1 Witchcraft in Connecticut. Powers-Banks Ancestry, p. 271-273. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Goodyear, STEPHEN, New Haven 1638, wasprob. a London merch. here chos. Assist. and, in 1641, dep.-gov. in wh.office he serv. until he wen t home; his w. embark. late in Jan. 1645 inLamberton's sh. for London, was lost with all the rest of many passeng.as the vessel was never heard of. He m. Lamberton's wid. went home 1656or 7, and d. soon at London, leav. here Mary, b. of firs t w. bef. com. toour country, who m. Thomas Lake of Boston; Eliz. wid. of Daniel Silevant;perhaps, however, this was only d. of Lamberton; Hannah, wh. m. 29 Oct.1656, Samuel Wakeman; Stephen, bapt. Aug. 1641; Lydia, June 1645, ment.in Lake's will ; Andrew, 8 Apr. 1649; John, b. of sec. w. Mar. 1651, wh.was a propr. at New Haven 1685, of wh. I kn. no more; and Esther, b. 12May 1654. SAVAGE, VOL 2 DICT FIRST SETTLERS OF NE, p. 278. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~We are told that his brother, Thomas Lake,"married Mary daughter of Stephen Goodyer of London Goldsmith." Now thisbrother was married in Ameri ca to Mary Goodyear and was slain by theIndians of Maine in 1676; his epitaph is in Copp's Hill, Boston. He wascaptain and his son Thomas inherited title and estate of Sir Edward Lake.Another fact concerning the Lakes: Anne, daughter to Captain an d MaryLake, was married first to John, grandson of the famous Rev. John Cotton, and on his death to no less a man than the Rev. Increase Mather ofBoston. Mary appears to have been eldest child of Stephen and born about1630. The genealogist says tha t the arms show that the Goodyears ofEngland were all one family, but she points out no relationship to SirHenry, the great friend of John Donne. Stephen Goodyear was one of the company of Davenport and Eatonwhich landed in Boston 28 June, 1637, proceeded to New Haven in 1638, andthere instituted their theocratic government. He was from the startprominent and engaged in foreign trad e sometimes by himself, sometimes incompany with Eaton and others. He was made deputy governor and thus second only to Eaton inmagisterial influence. The most famous incident in his business careerwas his connection with the ill-fated phantom ship celebrated by CottonMather and much later by Longfellow . A chief purpose in the expeditionwas the securing a charter and perhaps it was in some connection withthis that Mrs. Goodyear was on the vessel. After her loss Goodyearmarried the widow of Thomas Lamberton, the master of the ship. It wasperhap s the loss entailed in this ship that began Goodyear's financialdifficulties, a condition hinted at in the will of his father's friendBowlton in 1649 and very clear in the settlement of estate when his debtsamounted to over 2400o. Among his credit ors was one prominent inFairfield, Thomas Staples, to the amount of 204o. For the year followingthe phantom ship, 1647, there have been preserved some interestingcorrespondence between Goodyear and the Dutch governor, Stuyvesant. The chief feature isthe uniform friendliness of Stuyvesant to Goodyear as contrasted with hishostility to Governor Eaton. Yet Goodyear would make no concession to theDutch claims to New Haven , though he adds: "Wee purpose neither have weanything in our hearts but love and neighborlie correspondence to you . .. I am in haste -- only one word more to desire yow to send me 50 or 100skipples of salte." A later letter gets on more personal terms: "I rejoyce to hear ofthe late blessing in the little one given you and of your wifesstrength."1 Mr. Goodyear was last present at a colony meeting 30 April, 1657.On 17 August he asked leave to sell his share in the iron works, but theTown was not willing "except it be to such as they shall approve of."2He appears to have left for Eng land soon after. In May of 1658 his returnwas expected but by September3 had come the news of his death. The esteemin which he was held best comes out in a letter from Davenport to theyounger Winthrop: The last election day was the saddest to me that ever I saw inNew Haven, by our want of him whose presence was wont to make it a day ofno less contentment than solemnity. Being weary after my sermon, I wasabsent from the court. The firs t news that I heard from thence added tomy sorrow, for I heard that Mr. Goodyear was wholly left out in thechoice of magistrates, whereas I had been secure, thinking they purposedto choose him governor. And such had been the intention, but as Davenport goes on toexplain the necessity of expediency made it seem unadvisable to choosefor governor a man who was absent. This election occurred in May, 1658,Eaton having died in January. His descendants are many.4 His daughter Hannah was married to theRev. Samuel Wakeman 29 October, 1656. On his death she is said to havebeen married to a Nathaniel Burr (probably junior) and to have died in1721 leaving an estate of 900o. Powers-Banks Ancestry, p. 218-220.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIERS Towns of Pompey and Lafayette Source: Dwight C. Bruce (ed.), Onondaga's Centennial. Boston HistoryCo., 1896, Vol. 1, pp. 147-152. In 1840 there were 112 Revolutionary soldiers alive in Onondaga county, all of whom were drawing pensions. We begin the list with the town ofPompey, which was early settled by a number of soldiers and officers fromConnecticut and Massachusetts . In that old town, which included thepresent town of La Fayette, were fifty-six Revolutionary soldiers whomade their homes there. Several Hessians also lived in Pompey, amongwhom were John Bars, Hendrick Upperhousen and John Hill: Spoor, John--Made affidavit in March, 1821, he was seventy-one years old, enlisted in 1776 in Col Peter Gansevoort's New York regiment, wasappointed ensign in 1776, and owned "19 acres of very poor land inPompey, worth not over $5.00 per acre. " He owed $200. His wife anddaughter lived with him. https://sites.rootsweb.com/~nyononda/POMPEY/REVWAR.HTM
