Notes:

[689] Captain Theophilus Baldwin came from Milford, and settled in New Milford in or before the year 1717; a single man, and married Jerusha Beecher in 1722. His first land was laid to him in 1715 on Aspetuck Hill, which he probably sold soon afte r, and his second - a home lot and ten acres - was laid on both sides of Poplar highway, bounded south by Jonathan Buck, and north by James Prime, which he sold to Hezekiah and Ebenezer Baldwin; it being not far from the present Park Lane schoo l house. His first 40 acres are said to have been laid out in 1713 in Chestnut woods, northeasterly from the town plat. He resided, probably, in the vicinity of Poplar swamp, east side of the street, until his early death, May 1, 1745 in his 51s t year. When the second military company was organized by the town, Theophilus Baldwin was appointed captain of the first company, in October, 1738, and at the same time Joseph Bostwick was appointed lieutenant, and Samuel Canfield ensign; and th e boundary-line between the two companies was an east and west line across the town at the meeting house. Hence, after this date, for many years the two sections of the town were known by the terms "North End" and "South End" and the term "Nort h Farms" represented the farmers north of Poplar swamp, up to and above what is now Northville; and "South Farms" represented those on the plain below what is now Lanesville, or in the vicinity of Gallows Hill, but soon after it included thos e at the Iron Works. [690] Daniel Boardman in 1729 in consideration of 300 good chestnut rails sold to Theophilus Baldwin one half of a meadow lot in Mount Tom Meadow. Mount Tom Meadow was the swampy land that was divided into meadow lots in the early division of lan d on the east side of Mount Tom. Along with 26 others Theophilus Baldwin gave a 1 acre parcel of land to James Hine that he might become their smith for a term of 4 years. [691] Town Militia: For several years, till the year 1744, there was but one military company in the town - which was formed and organized somewhere between the years 1715 and 1720. The officers were as follows: Captain Stephen Noble (served 20 ye ars), Lieut. John Bostwick, Ens. William Gaylord, Capt. Theophilus Baldwin, Lieut. Joseph Bostwick, Ens. Samuel Canfield. (The second set of officers were appointed in 1738). [692] May 14, 1719 - Petition was made by 23 families of New Milford - one of those being that of Theophilus Baldwin - to the Governour of Connecticutt for permission to levy a tax on those holding town "Rights" but not residing there, that the y might raise money to build the first meeting house. The meeting house was built. July 11, 1729, it was voted that there should be a committee chosen to seat the meeting house, who shall seat persons according to age, dignity, and estate; that al l persons above the age of 55 years shall be seated according to their age, dignity, and list of estate, and Capt. Stephen Noble, Sergt. Theophilus Baldwin, ...were chosen to seat the meeting house according to the directions above mentioned, an d that it shall be done by the list of this present year. [693] Re: the Deed to the North Purchase annex to New Milford: This tract of land was not purchased by the town of New Milford, but by certain individuals associated together for this purpose; the number being 64 and the name of each, with the num ber of the lot laid to him, may be seen in the following list:...2 Theophilus Baldwin... Jonathan Buck one of the first settlers of the town, proposed to establish himself as a cooper in the town upon conditions that he be given certain land, mone y, or labor.
