Almon Edgerton was born at Monson, Massachusetts on February 20, 1820, the son of Dan and Mindwell (Lane) Edgerton.  He had a twin brother named Alfred.  Circa 1825 – 1830, Almon’s parents removed to Vernon, Connecticut, where his father died in June of 1830.  At the time of the 1830 Federal Census, Almon was included in the household of his elder brother, Edwin, in Vernon, Connecticut. 

 

Almon Edgerton was married twice.  His first wife was Susan C. Sutton, daughter of John and Azubah (Balcom) Sutton of Douglas, Massachusetts.  Susan was born in Douglas in the year 1828.  Almon and Susan were married at Oxford, Massachusetts on January 21, 1852; they subsequently resided in Sturbridge (Worcester County) and West Springfield (Hampden County), Massachusetts.  Almon and Susan had two children: a daughter, Della Augusta, born at Sturbridge on June 18, 1854; and a son, Charles Almon, born at West Springfield on July 14, 1856.

Almon’s twin brother, Alfred, was residing nearby in West Springfield; his household was enumerated a few houses earlier on the same page of the census roll.

 

Mrs. Susan C. (Sutton) Edgerton died at West Springfield, Massachusetts on November 10, 1879.  According to the record of her death at West Springfield (VR 310:380:70), Susan was aged 50 years, 4 months and 21 days, and had been born at Uxbridge, the daughter of John and Azubah [Sutton].  The cause of deaths was given as cancer.

 

Susan’s death was also recorded in the 1880 Federal Census Mortality Schedule of “Persons who Died during the Year ending May 31, 1880” in West Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts as follows:

Almon Edgerton married as his second wife, Aruma Clark Root, daughter of Orrin and Aruma (Clark) Root of Southampton and Westfield, Massachusetts.  According to the marriage record at Springfield (VR 446:61), “Almond” and Aruma were married there on March 4, 1885.  Almon was listed as a mechanic, aged 63, born at Monson, son of Daniel and Mindwell [Edgerton]; and Aruma was aged 50, born at Westfield, the daughter of Orrin and Aruma [Root].  The marriage was Almon’s second and Aruma’s first.

 

Almon Edgerton was listed in the 1890 Directory of Springfield, Massachusetts.  His address was given as “Westfield, West Springfield”.  He was listed again in the 1891 Directory of Springfield, Massachusetts, where his address was given as “Westfield and Elm, West Springfield” (see Springfield, Massachusetts Directory, 1890, 1891; Price, Lee & Co.; Springfield, MA, 1890, 1891).

 

Almon Edgerton died at West Springfield, Massachusetts on July 29, 1898.  According to the record of his death at West Springfield (VR 481:815:55), Almon was aged 78 years, 5 months and 9 days, and had been born at Monson, the son of Daniel and Mindwell (Lane) Edgerton.  His residence was given as “5 Westfield St.” and the cause of death as apoplexy.

 

Mrs. Aruma C. (Root) Edgerton, was enumerated in the 1900 Federal Census of West Springfield of West Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts (dwelling #82; family #96) as “Aruma C. Edgerton, widow, b. April 1834 in Massachusetts, aged 66”, and was residing at 5 Westfield Street.  According to the census record, Aruma had not had any children.

 

Mrs. Aruma Clark (Root) Edgerton died at West Springfield, Massachusetts on June 29, 1911.  According to her death certificate (Massachusetts State Death Certificates, #27), she was aged 77 years, 2 months, 21 days, and had been born at Southampton, Massachusetts on April 8, 1834, the daughter of Orrin Root and Aruma Clark.  The cause of death was given as “apoplexy with complete paralysis”.

 

Almon Edgerton and both of his wives were buried at the Church Hill Cemetery (aka White Church Cemetery) in West Springfield, Massachusetts.
