Alonson Edgerton, son of Jacob and Nancy (Lee) Edgerton.

Asenath Case, daughter of Simeon and Violet (Burr) Case.

Alonson Edgerton was born at West Granby, Connecticut in the year 1793, the son of Jacob and Nancy (Lee) Edgerton.  He was probably the eldest of Jacob and Nancy’s many children.  (They had anywhere from fifteen to nineteen, the number varying from source to source.)   Ruth Cost Duncan in her account of the Case family, John Case and his Descendants (see full citation below), provides a specific birthdate of February 3, 1792 for Alonson Edgerton, however, she does not cite a source for this information, nor has any corrobation of this date been found elsewhere.

Alonson Edgerton served as a private in Capt. Sterling’s regiment of the Connecticut Militia during the War of 1812 (see War of 1812 Muster Rolls, box 64, extract #602).  Alonson Edgerton was also noted as serving as a private in Capt. Hezekiah Webster’s company from September 13, 1813 to November 1, 1813 (see Record of Service of Connecticut Men, Part II, War of 1812, pg. 48).

Alonson was married to Asenath Case, daughter of Simeon and Violet (Burr) Case, and the elder sister of Lucretia Case who was married to Alonson’s younger brother, Lee Edgerton.  Alonson and Asenath had six children, only three of whom were married and had families of their own (ie. Diantha, Washburn and Alonzo).  The burial records of the North Canton Cemetery reference the two elder children who died in infancy, the entries reading:  “an infant child of Alonson Edgerton who died November 26, 1815” and  “[1817] Feb 14th a child of Mr Alonson and Mrs Arseneth [sic] Edgerton aged 3 months” (see “North Canton Cemetery Inscriptions, 1754 – 1855”; The Connecticut Historical Society Bulletin; Vol 31, no. 2; April 1966; p. 64; and Vol. 31, No. 3; July 1966; p. 91).  The existence of the youngest son, Chester, is evidenced only by the 1850 Federal Census (see below).

The household of Alonson Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut (pg. 281), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Alonson);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (? – possibly a brother);

1 male “between 16 and 18”  (?);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son Washburn);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Asenath); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Diantha).

The household of Alonson Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut (pg. 316), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (Alonson);

1 male “of 15 and under 20”  (?);

1 male “of 10 and under 15”  (son Washburn);

1 male “under 5 years of age”  (son Alonzo);

1 female “of 30 and under 40”  (wife Asenath); and,

1 female “of 10 and under 15”  (daughter Diantha).

The household of Alonson Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut (pg. 125), with the following enumeration:

1 male “40 – 50”  (Alonson);

1 male “30 – 40”  (? – possibly younger brother, Caleb);

1 male “15 – 20”  (son Alonzo);

1 male “5 – 10”  (son Chester);

1 female “40 – 50”  (wife Asenath); and,

1 female “20 – 30”  (daughter Diantha).

The household of Alonson Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut (pg. 155; dwelling #195; family #210; enum. August 3, 1850), as follows:

Alonson was residing adjacent to his younger brother, Caleb, at this time.

Alonson Edgerton died at West Granby, Connecticut on September 20, 1851, “aged 58 years”.  He was buried at the West Granby Cemetery, where numerous other members of his family are also interred.  His death was entered in the record  book of the “West Granby Burying-Ground” (pg. 18, no. 359), as follows:

“[1851]…Sep 29…Alonson Edgerton…[age] 58…[lot] 39”

Alonson Edgerton did not leave a will.  Lyman Wilcox, Nahum Holcomb and Anson Cooley were appointed to distribute the estate, and they subsequently made two returns to the probate court.  The first, dated July 30, 1852, laid out the dower of Alonson’s widow, Asenath; and the second, dated July 31, 1852, distributed the remainder of the estate between the three surviving children – Diantha A., Washburn, and Alonzo.  The youngest son, Chester, was not included in the distribution, so it is presumed that he had predeceased his father.  A transcript of the two probate returns is attached.

Mrs. Asenath Edgerton survived her husband twenty years.  She was residing with her son, Alonzo, at the time of the 1860 and 1870 Federal Censuses.  Asenath died of plurasy at West Granby, Connecticut on January 2, 1873, “aged 81 years”.  She was buried beside her husband at West Granby Cemetery.  The records of the “West Granby Burying-Ground” (pg. 25, no. 512) list her death as follows:

“[1873]…January 2…Asenath widow of Alonson Edgerton…plurasy…[age] 81…[lot] 39”
