In August of 1862, Alonson G. Edgerton, “aged 33, of Minnesota”, enlisted for service as a private in the Union Army.  He was mustered into the 10th Minnesota Infrantry Regiment on August 23, 1862.  On March 18, 1864, he was promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant and commissioned an officer in the 67th Infantry Regiment of the United States Colored Troops, Company G.  He was mustered out of service on November 11, 1864 (see Minnesota in the Civil and Indian Wars 1861-65, 1890).

According to the above census record, Victoria was the mother of six children, five of whom were still living.  Vivia’s occupation was listed as “teacher”.  [The age and birthyear for the youngest son, Alonson Gifford Jr., were recorded incorrectly in this census; he was born in September 1890.]

 

Alonson G. Edgerton applied for a Civil War Pension on August 28, 1882.  The invalid claim was filed from the state of Ohio, and cited Alanson’s service in the 10th Regiment, Minnesota Infantry (Co. B); and in the 67th Regiment, U.S.C. Infantry (Co. G.).  Victoria G. Edgerton, widow of Alonson G. Edgerton, later applied for a Civil War Pension on December 27, 1921.  The application was filed from the state of Oklahoma (see  National Archives Pension Applications; Application #457972, Certificate #298742; and Application #1182853, Certificate #911257).
