Alonzo Edgerton was born September 22, 1826 at West Granby, Connecticut,
the son of Alonson and Asenath (Case) Edgerton. Ruth Cost Duncan’s John Case and his
Descendants (West Simsbury, Connecticut; 1991; pg. 65) lists a birthdate
of September 22, 1827; however, both Alonzo’s death record
(Granby VR 3:524) and his gravestone at Granby Street Cemetery confirm that
the correct year was 1826.
Alonzo Edgerton resided in West
Granby his entire life.
He was a farmer. Upon the death
of his father in 1851, he inherited a portion of the home farm, upon which he
lived for the remainder of his life.
His mother, Asenath, resided there with him until her death in 1873.

Circa 1873, Alonzo Edgerton was married to his housekeeper,
Mrs. Katharine C. (King) Roberts.
Katharine (“Kate”) was a widow and had had at least two children by
her first marriage – a son, Henry, and a daughter, Jennie. Katharine had probably come to live with
the Alonzo after the death of his mother in January 1873. Alonzo and Katharine had three
children: an infant son, born October
20, 1873, who died the next day; Lloyd Lee, born April 5, 1876; and George
A., born September 8, 1880.

According to the above record, Katherine was the
mother of six children, four of whom were still living. Alonzo’s occupation was listed as “farmer”,
and George was listed as a “farm laborer”.
Alonzo Edgerton died at Granby, Connecticut
on February 1, 1905. According to the
record of his death (Granby VR 3:524), he was a farmer, married, aged 78
years, 4 months and 9 days, and had resided at West Granby. The cause of death was listed as “cerebral
hemorrhage, coma”. The record also
states that Alonzo had been born in Granby,
the son of Alonson and Asenath Edgerton.
Alonzo Edgerton died intestate. He was survived by his widow, “Kate C.
Edgerton”, and two sons: Loyd L.
Edgerton, and George A. Edgerton. Mrs.
Katharine Edgerton petitoned for letters of administration and they were duly
granted on February 7, 1905 to Fred B. Case of Granby.
He subsequently returned an inventory of the estate on February 17,
1905, which valued the entire estate at $3,134.71. These and other documents were filed with
the Granby District Probate, Volume 14, pp. 714 – 718. A transcript of these probate records is attached.
Alonzo Edgerton was buried at the Granby Center Cemetery
(aka. Granby Street
Cemetery), in the village of Granby
(Section 1, plot #101). His gravestone
there was inscribed with the complete dates of his birth and death, that
is: “September 22, 1826 – February 1,
1905”.
Mrs. Katharine (King) Edgerton died at Granby, Connecticut
on February 1, 1911 – exactly six years after the death of her husband. According to the record of her death (Granby VR 3:532), she was a widowed housewife, aged 71
years, 0 months and 30 days, and had resided at Granby.
The cause of death was listed as “fecal inposition, toxemia and
exhaustion”. The record also states
that Katharine was born in Suffield,
Connecticut, the daughter of
Roland King and Jenette Davis.
Katharine was buried beside her husband, Alonzo, at the Granby Center Cemetery. Her gravestone inscription there lists her
dates as “January 1, 1840 – January 31, 1911”.
