“AMASA EDGERTON was born in Erie County, Penn., August 16, 1825 [sic], and is one of a family of eight children born to Horace and Betsey Edgerton, who were natives of New York, where they were married.  In an early day, they removed to Erie County, Penn., remaining until the year 1835, then removing to La Porte County, Ind., where Mrs. Edgerton died shortly afterward.  In 1836, he and family moved to Lake County, settling near Cedar Lake, where he remained until his death.  Shortly after they arrived in Lake County, Amasa Edgerton went to live with a man named Horace Wood, remaining with him about five years; he then lived with his father until his marriage, which took place on October 3 [sic], 1852, his wife being Miss Dorothy M., daughter of James and Almira Palmer.  She was born in St. Joseph County, Ind., March 7, 1835.  In 1854, Mr. Edgerton moved to the farm on which he now lives, which he had purchased previously, and has since remained; he owns 100 acres of land.  They have had three children – an infant son (deceased), William A. and Palmer C.”

The following obituary notice for Amasa Edgerton was reprinted in Reports of the Historical Secretary of the Old Settler and Historical Association of Lake Co, IN From 1906 to 1910 (Lake County Historical Society; 1906):

“Died at Creston on Saturday, June 11th [sic], Amasa Edgerton, the last of the four sons, Franklin, Alfred, Amos, Amasa, who came with their father, Horace Edgerton, and their three sisters, Freedom, Polly and Esther, in 1836, to become settlers at Cedar Lake.  Amasa Edgerton was born, so says a record from some members of the family, in Erie County, Pennsylvania, August 16th, 1824, and so in two more months would have been 86 years of age.  He has been an interested member of this association.  He leaves two sons and ten grandchildren, some of whom, it is to be hoped, will come in and help fill up the broken ranks.”
