The following commemorative biography of Dr. Ambrose Earl Edgerton (written by David O. Harrington, M.D.) was published in the annual Transactions of the American Ophthalmological Society (Vol. 74; 1976; pp. 3-4):

“Ambrose Earl Edgerton died on October 15, 1975, in San Francisco, California, at the age of eighty-six.

He was elected to membership in the American Ophthalmological Society in 1942.  His candidate’s thesis was an exhaustive and definitive study of herpes zoster ophthalmicus.

Dr. Edgerton was born in Camden, New York.  He was graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1914.  He was a veteran of World War I where he served as a captain in the Medical Corps.  He was the recipient of a Master of Science degree and a Doctor of Science degree from the University of Pennsylvania for graduate work in ophthalmology.  In the early 1930’s he studied ophthalmology in England, Italy, France and India.  He was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1930.

He was active in his specialty organization and was a member of the San Francisco Medical Society, the California Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Pacific Coast Oto-Ophthalmological Society, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology.  He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Association of Military surgeons, and an active Shriner and 32nd degree mason.  He was for many years the Chief of the Eye Department at both St. Luke’s and French hospitals.

Dr. Edgerton is survived by his wife of almost sixty years, Mrs. Alice Cameron Edgerton, and a daughter, Mrs. Carl H. Riesen.  There are two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was a gentle person who will be greatly missed by his family, his friends and his patients.  The American Ophthalmological Society extends sincere sympathy to his family.”
