At
the time of this enumeration, the family was residing on Chestnut Street. Ambrose’s occupation was listed as
“physician – medicine”. The
enumeration also noted that Ambrose and Alice were aged 27 and 25
respectively at the time of their first marriage.
The following commemorative biography of Dr.
Ambrose Earl Edgerton (written by David O. Harrington, M.D.) was published in
the annual Transactions of the American
Ophthalmological Society (Vol. 74; 1976; pp. 3-4):
“Ambrose Earl Edgerton died on October 15, 1975, in San Francisco, California,
at the age of eighty-six.
He was elected to membership in the American
Ophthalmological Society in 1942. His
candidate’s thesis was an exhaustive and definitive study of herpes zoster
ophthalmicus.
Dr. Edgerton was born in Camden, New York. He was graduated from Jefferson
Medical College,
Philadelphia,
in 1914. He was a veteran of World War
I where he served as a captain in the Medical Corps. He was the recipient of a Master of Science
degree and a Doctor of Science degree from the University of Pennsylvania
for graduate work in ophthalmology. In
the early 1930’s he studied ophthalmology in England,
Italy, France and India. He was certified by the American Board of
Ophthalmology in 1930.
He was active in his specialty organization and was a
member of the San Francisco Medical Society, the California Medical
Association, the American Medical Association, the Pacific Coast
Oto-Ophthalmological Society, and the American Academy
of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology.
He was a fellow of the American
College of Surgeons, a
member of the Association of Military surgeons, and an active Shriner and
32nd degree mason. He was for many
years the Chief of the Eye Department at both St. Luke’s and French
hospitals.
Dr. Edgerton is survived by his wife of almost sixty
years, Mrs. Alice Cameron Edgerton, and a daughter, Mrs. Carl H. Riesen. There are two grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
He was a gentle person who will be greatly missed by his
family, his friends and his patients.
The American Ophthalmological Society extends sincere sympathy to his
family.”
