Andrew Edgerton, son of Sims and Lucretia (Horsford) Edgerton.

Ann Webb, daughter of Nathaniel and Zerviah (Abbe) Webb.

Andrew Edgerton was born at Norwich, Connecticut on February 7, 1769, the son of Sims and Lucretia (Horsford) Edgerton.  He was baptized at the First Congregational Church of Norwich on February 19th of the same year.  Andrew’s father, Sims, died when Andrew was about thirteen years old.

Andrew Edgerton settled initially in the town of Windham, Connecticut, where he was married on October 16, 1794 to Ann (aka. “Nancy”) Webb, daughter of Nathaniel and Zerviah (Abbe) Webb.  Ann was born at Windham on November 5, 1772.  A notice of the marriage was published in the Windham Herald on Saturday, October 18, 1794.  Three children were recorded to “Andrew and Nancy Edgerton” at Windham (VR 3:35) – Mary Ann, Edward and Abby – with a note that the eldest daughter, Mary Ann, was born at Burlington, New York.

Andrew Edgerton was listed as a head of household in the 1800 Federal Census of Windham, Windham County, Connecticut (pg. 585), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Andrew);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (? - possibly younger brother Joshua);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son Edward);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Ann); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Mary Ann).

The household of Andrew Edgerton was recorded in the 1810 Federal Census of Windham, Windham County, Connecticut (pg. 572), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Andrew);

1 male “of 10 and under 16”  (son Edward);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Ann);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Mary Ann); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Abby).

Andrew Edgerton was mentioned in the will of Zephaniah Swift of Windham (dated August 24, 1823) in reference to a house he had sold to Mr. Swift; that is, “…and of my home farm including the land at Chestnut hill and the land adjoining the House I purchased of Andrew Edgerton…” (Windham Probate, Vol. 188, p. 18).

According to the Abbe-Abbey Genealogy (Cleveland Abbe; The Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor Co., Conn., 1916; pg. 73), Andrew and Ann (Webb) Edgerton later settled in Michigan; however, several Connecticut Newspapers reported the death of “Andrew Edgerton of Windham” in April or May of 1813 (see The Windham Herald, 4/29/1813; Connecticut Mirror, 5/10/1813; Connecticut Courant, 5/11/1813).  According to the death notice published in the Connecticut Courant on Tuesday, May 11, 1813, “Mr. Andrew Edgerton, late of Windham, in this State” had died at East Bloomfield, New York.  Unfortunately, none of the notices gives a precise date of death.

Following Andrew’s death, his widow, Nancy, removed with their children to Mexico, Oswego County, New York.

“Nancy Edgerton” was recorded as a head of household in the 1820 Federal Census of Mexico, Oswego County, New York (pg. 33).  The enumeration of her household included:

1 female “of 45 years and upwards”  (Ann); and,

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (son Edward).

Mrs. Nancy Edgerton later removed west with her son, Edward, to Kendall County, Illinois.  She was still living as of 1850, when she was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Big Grove Township, Kendall County, Illinois (pg. 289; dwelling #110, family #98; enum. August 30, 1850).  She was residing at that time with her son, Edward Edgerton, and was enumerated as “Nancy Edgerton, aged 75, born in Connecticut”.  Nancy died at Big Grove Township on April 13, 1852 and was buried at the Millington-Newark Cemetery.
