Anson Stiles Edgerton was born at Barkhamsted, Connecticut on April 2, 1823.  He was the third son and fourth child of Daniel Lee and Lucretia (Case) Edgerton.  Anson appears to have gone mainly by his middle name, as he is usually referred to in census and military records as “Stiles Edgerton” or “A. Stiles Edgerton”.  The only known reference to his full name is from his death record (Granby VR 3:510).

Stiles was raised in Barkhamstead and upon his maturity settled in Agawam (Feeding Hills), Hampden County, Massachusetts, where he resided for the majority of his adult life.  He was probably the Stiles Edgerton, farmer, aged 25 from New Hartford, Connecticut, who was listed as a passenger on the ship “Selman” leaving New York on April 11, 1849 bound for San Francisco and the recently discovered Gold Fields of California (see NEHGR, Vol. 90, Jan. 1936, p. 32).  Whether Stiles was successful in his western pursuits is not known; however, by 1854 he had apparently returned back east.

Stiles Edgerton was married at Hartford, Connecticut on November 21, 1854 to Hannah Baker Prince, daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Popkins) Prince of Springfield, Massachusetts.  According to the marriage record (Hartford VR 1:356), “Stiles Edgerton” was a farmer, aged 31, born in Barkhamsted, Connecticut, son of Lee Edgerton, and resident of Holyoke, Massachusetts at the time of the marriage.  Hannah was aged 28, born in Springfield, Massachusetts, daughter of Daniel Prince, and a resident of West Springfield, Massachusetts.

Stiles and Hannah (Prince) Edgerton had only one child – a daughter Alice E., born at Agawam, Massachusetts on January 13, 1856.  The 1860 Federal Census lists Alice’s age as “9”, indicating that she was born circa 1851, but this is certainly in error given the marriage of her parents in 1854.  A more consistent birthyear circa 1856 is reported in the 1870 and 1880 Federal Census enumerations (see below).  Furthermore, Alice’s obituary (The Berkshire Evening Eagle, Friday, June 11, 1943) gives her complete birthdate as January 13, 1856.

Stiles Edgerton, “a carpenter, of Agawam, Massachusetts”, enlisted on  September 2, 1862, “aged 38”, for service as a private in the Union Army.  He served in the I Company, 46th Infantry Regiment of Massachusetts and was discharged at New Berne, North Carolina on June 3, 1863 (see Massachusetts Soldiers, Sailors and Marines in the Civil War).

The household of “Stiles Edgerton” was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Agawam, Hampden County, Massachusetts (pg. 645; dwelling #204; family #222; enum. July 12, 1860), as follows:

According to the above census record, Hannah was the mother of one child.

Mrs. Hannah (Prince) Edgerton died at Agawam, Massachusetts on January 4, 1910.  According to her death certificate (#339), she was the widow of “Stiles Edgerton”, aged 84 years, 8 months and 20 days, and had been born at Springfield, Massachusetts, the daughter of Daniel Prince and Sarah Popkins.  Hannah was buried beside her husband at Feeding Hills Cemetery on January 6, 1910.

There has been little report of the descendants of Stiles and Hannah’s only daughter, Alice E. Edgerton.  She was married to Charles Edgar Wilner, of Dalton, Massachusetts and had six children, many of whom resided in the Dalton area.
