Artemus Edgerton was born at Monson, Massachusetts on August 14, 1807, the second son of Dan Edgerton Sr. and his second wife, Mindwell Lane. He was raised in Monson, Massachusetts. Circa 1825 – 1830, he removed with his father to Tolland County, Connecticut.

Artemus Edgerton was married on February 6, 1831 at Mansfield, Connecticut to Eliza Ann Smith (Mansfield Vital Records, Book 2, pg. 53). Eliza was born in Connecticut (possibly Ellington or Colchester) circa 1805; her parentage has not been ascertained. Artemus and Eliza settled in the town of Ellington (Tolland County), where they had two children: a daughter, Elizabeth, born circa 1835; and a son, James, born circa 1837.

Artemus and Eliza Edgerton were divorced on November 5, 1846. According to the divorce petition filed by Mrs. Eliza Ann Edgerton, Artemus had deserted his family. The petition also states that Eliza and Artemus had been married at Mansfield, Connecticut on April 2, 1830 [sic] (see Grace Louise Knox & Barbara B. Ferris, Connecticut Divorces, Superior Court Records for the Counties of New London, Tolland, & Windham 1719-1910, Heritage Books, Inc.; Bowie, Maryland, 1987, pg. 182).

There is no further account of Artemus Edgerton. At the time of the 1850 Federal Census, his ex-wife Eliza and the two children were recorded in the household of Alfred and Susan Foot in Colchester, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 48; dwelling #740; family #844-845; enum. August 29, 1850). The household was enumerated as follows:
