Asa Edgerton was born on March 16, 1787 at Clarendon, Vermont, the second son and third child of John and Lydia (Reynolds) Edgerton.  When Asa was about ten years old, his parents removed to Cabot, in Washington County (then Caledonia County), Vermont, where Asa resided for most of his life.  Asa made his living as a farmer, merchant and carpenter.

Asa Edgerton was married twice.  He was married first on February 14, 1810 at Boxford, Massachusetts to Dorcas Kimball (see Vital Records of Boxford, Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849 (Topsfield Historical Society: Topsfield, Massachusetts; 1905; pg. 137).  According to the marriage record, Asa was “of Cabot, Vt.”.  Dorcas was born in Boxford on May 8, 1784, daughter of Enoch and Huldah (Gould) Kimball (ibid; pg. 54).

Asa and Dorcas resided in Cabot, where Asa was listed as a head of household in the Federal Censuses of 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840.

Asa and Dorcas Edgerton are known to have had at least three sons – Alonzo Augustus, born at Cabot on December 14, 1811; William Henry, born at Cabot in the year 1814; and James O., born at Cabot in the year 1816.  The second son died of consumption at Cabot, Vermont on July 25, 1834 at the age of twenty years.

The household of Asa Edgerton was recorded in the 1810 Federal Census of Cabot, Caledonia County (now Washington County), Vermont (pg. 15), with the following enumeration:

3 males “of 16 and under 26”  (Asa and ?); and,

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (wife Dorcas).

Wisner (see Cabot Town Records, Deeds, Volume III).  Asa was listed with one dwelling house, valued at four hundred dollars, and twenty acres of land, appraised at two hundred dollars.  His name was also listed under the levies on merchants “for money on hand and debts due”; he was assessed eight dollars.

Mrs. Dorcas (Kimball) Edgerton died at Cabot, Vermont on December 19, 1836 at the age of fifty-two years.  She was buried at Cabot Village Cemetery, where her son, William Henry, had been buried just two years earlier.

Asa Edgerton was remarried at Chester, New Hampshire on December 24, 1838 to Mrs. Jane Eveline (Underhill) Thayer, daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth (Graham) Underhill of Chester, New Hampshire.  Jane had previously been married to Elihu Thayer Jr. (1802 – 1834) of Kingston, New Hampshire.  She was born in Chester, New Hampshire on August 6, 1807, and died there on June 14, 1874.  Asa had at least two children by his second wife – a daughter, Caroline Lydia, born in Cabot on October 14, 1839; and an infant son who died on September 6, 1843 and was buried in the family plot at Cabot Cemetery.
